Problem with adjusting cards and products.

It seems to me that I spend hours on my cards and products updating them so they do not go into the hidden category. It also seems to me that when I go back to a category, like Christmas Cards, most of the cards and products are back to where I started in the first place. Is it a waste of time to update? Does anyone else have this problem? I really don't understand why this happens. Any help given is appreciated.
