transparent file

I have a png file but I want to make it bigger without losing the transparency. I tried to enlarge in on the paint application but it says that I will lose the transparency and that's what I want to keep. Can anyone please help me with instructions or with a big transparency clip?

It's a transparency strip but it's too small for me to use on a certain product.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Hmm. What program/software are you using? It’s definitely possible because I do it all the time. It must be a limitation in the software you use. So sorry about that.

@northernmaple I will be happy to create you a big clip tomorrow night if you still will need it - I use my laptop only during night hours. Just respond with the size you would need.

Hi MOM,

I'm trying to create an acrylic sign that is 24x36".I'm just using the paint application that came with the computer. I struggle with computer jargon. I'd want to do it horizontally and not vertically as shown. I don't know if that makes a difference or not.

You should be able to enlarge in MS Paint just fine. If you're losing the transparency it might be because you're saving it in the wrong format. You need to save it as a png file NOT as a jpg. I tried it on several different files and couldn't get it to fail.

If that doesn't work, perhaps you could give us a few more details about what steps you're taking and how/when you get the message saying that you will lose the transparency.

Hi Cat,

I opened the file (which is in a PNG format) in Paint. I hit "resize" and changed it from "100" to "300", hit "ok", hit "save as" and gave it a new name (made sure it was PNG) and then I got the pop up message "Any transparency will be lost if you save this picture. Do you want this to continue?" But I don't want to lose the transparency 😞

Hmmm... OK, there must be something different in the steps we're taking. Here are screenshots of what I'm doing.

1) open the png file in paint

2) Enlarge the image

3) Save as PNG

3) Give it a new name

4) Click save

Is there anything different in the steps that you're taking? If not, then I'm at a loss. Maybe there's something wrong with the file?

That looks like what I'm doing too so I'm at a loss 🤔

The file itself is just a transparency to put under text to give it a frosted glass look.

Very strange. Do you get an actual error message telling you that the transparency will be lost, or does it just convert it to an opaque image? If you do get an error message, can you take a screen shot and post it here? (To take a screen shot hold down the control button and then hit the print screen button - it will copy an image of the screen to the clipboard, then you can just right click in your comment here and choose paste.) Maybe there will be some clue there...

This looks like an older version of Paint. What version of Windows are you using? It looks like in XP and older versions Paint doesn't support transparency. I can't find a definitive answer about Windows 10, but I did find this:

"Microsoft Paint version 11.2308.18.0 and higher supports transparency" but I can't figure out how to determine which version of Paint you've got!

But... assuming that this is the problem, you might try using Photopea - it's a free online image editor. https://www.photopea.com/

I was able to easily enlarge a png file and save it - I used the "export" feature to save it with a new name. Maybe that will work for you?
