Poster Advice

Good afternoon!

I am bewildered by all the poster sizes / types, etc. Can someone give me advice on which size and type of poster is the most popular? I want to put some posters for sale, but I have no idea which one(s) to choose.

I'm not sure there's any one size poster that's most popular. It depends on what the poster will be used for. If it's for an event, it's a one-time use, but if it's meant to be framed and hung on a wall, the customer might choose design and size carefully so it goes with the decor. Even in that case, it can be further dependent on the customer's need. For instance, I've sold a number of posters that are a chart specifically for musicians to hang on the wall so they can look at it to figure out what scale or mode or whatever they want to use. The size they choose will depend on how close or far the poster will be from where they're sitting with their instrument.

Your best bet is to create designs that will fit well on most standard sizes, giving customers a choice. Make the design large enough to fit a large poster size, then check to see how it will look on the smaller sizes. If it doesn't work well, put more space around the design so it doesn't get cut off. Also, don't choose to display the largest poster because the price can be off-putting. Choose a medium or even a small size, making sure the image is large enough in pixels so a customer can choose a large poster if so desired.

It's no wonder you were confused with all the sizes and shapes. Even when using my method for choosing, you can still end up doing battle with two of the shapes: the square and the long, narrow one. My suggestion for those is to ignore them unless the design screams for one of them.
