Swash features in fonts

Hello

How do we use the swash feature with the matching font. How do you make the little boxes come up in order for the letters to connect seamlessly. I don't know why I can't find any tips on this, surely I can't be the only person on the planet that doesn't how to do this?? Any tips would be most welcome.
