Latest changes to the crop tool

Are the changes I am seeing to the crop tool today permanent or just a test? I used to be able to take an image with both a top and bottom or opposing corners and remove one or the other side so I could use just the one side. I can't seem to do that any more. I've tried using the "free form" aspect ratio and others and as far as I can figure it can't be done. Am I missing something? The old way (even the newest old way) was simple and straight forward. This new crop tool seems to be counter intuitive. Now I have to cut the old image into pieces and upload them separately which seems to be a waste of space.

I am able to drag the white corner handles and slide them up and down, and select out just part of an image, without it resizing. You have to make sure you click the Crop button but NOT the Zoom.
