Whenever we are finalising each object in our design to become a templated one, (using the layers area) as we move to the next object to be templated, we always have to select it TWICE, before we can proceed. In other words, we can select the next object in our layers area, but the selection STAYS on the previous object and we have to select the next object AGAIN to template it. Perhaps there is a reason or perhaps it can be fixed. it’s always been like this.

This drives me CRAZY! I complained about it ages ago and was told that it was because my internet connection was slow. I have a 120gigabit connection, so I sincerely doubt that’s the problem.
If you make any changes to the template fields (you make an object a template, or you change the field name or the URL parameter) and they try to click away from that object, the focus just jumps back, and you have to click again to get someplace else. It always trips me up because I’ll change a field name or URL parameter and then go on to the next one… at least I THINK I’ve moved on to the next one, but the focus doesn’t actually change, so then I enter the info for the next field, but really, I’m still on the last field, and pretty soon the whole thing’s a mess!
The big clue that there’s something programmatic going on here is if you change a field name, click away (which doesn’t actually do anything) and then click undo, nothing happens. You have to hit undo twice for your change to undo! I’ve tried hitting enter after changing a field name and everything else I can think of, but nothing helps. The same problem exists with photo templates as well as text templates - it’s like there are two separate events triggering in sequence or something.
I use Windows 10 and have tried both Edge and Chrome. The problem is the same in both browsers.
I have never encountered this with my touchscreen iPad, which is where I do most designing. (I am adding this to help provide clues to the engineer who will try to solve this problem.)
This happens to me as well (and has for years), using a new/current MacBook Pro on what should be the top or middle tier cable internet speed from a cable provider in a very suburban area. So internet speed should not be the issue for me, either.
Happens to me as well. Every time I turn a layer into a template.
I don’t believe it has anything to do with the internet connection. I am on fast fibre connection. I believe it has something to do with saving and refreshing the template layer name.
As @J32Design assumes, it’s more a refreshing and saving issue within the tool rather than a slow internet connection. The trick for avoiding such annoyances is to work a bit slower and to let the tool save your changes before you go further while editing template label and URL fields. In other words, edit your field content, then wait for a second or two until the tool saves the changes, and only then select your next object or fill in the other template field. This way you avoid the issue of template field content not sticking after editing as well as the layer selection issues.
This happens when I click the objects from the layers menu; when I click on the objects in the design area, they take right away. This also drives me crazy because I end up overwriting template names and have to re-do them. Geez, Zazzle.
@chefcateringbiz You’re right! I just tried it and it worked! I have to think about whether to do that regularly or not. I really try to avoid clicking on things in the design area once I’m “done” with the design because it’s just SOOOO easy to move something slightly without intending to. If your mouse isn’t completely still when you click, the object will get dragged slightly out of place. I guess it’s a “pick your poison” situation. Thanks for letting us know how to get around the double click problem though!
@Fiorenzo Working slower doesn’t help. I just ran an experiment where I changed the URL parameter on a field, waited 30 seconds, then clicked on a new layer in the list. The issue isn’t that the focus doesn’t change - it does change momentarily, but then it snaps back to the layer you just edited - so clearly something is grabbing the focus back. However as chefcateringbiz reported above, you can work around the problem by clicking on the object you want in the design area rather than the layers list.
I agree Cat, I have tried that many times (as I have with copy paste - and that DOES work) however in THIS situation for me, it makes no difference. It never has.
@Cat You’re right, just tested. Was then wondering and tested a bit further. The issue with the stuck layer element happens when you directly switch from within the template label or URL field. IMO it’s a focus issue. You can avoid the problem by simply clicking on a blank spot on the left (layers) or right (tools) sidebar before you select a different layer element. This way you get the focus out of the field and when you click on the layer element afterward, it works fine. Not perfect, but quick and painless.
My 1-2 second waiting-for-saving hint still solves the issue with the not sticking field changes which can be very annoying.
@J32Design No, the refresh and saving happens also while you’re inside the fields. As soon as you stop editing for a second or so the actual changes are saved. If you are too fast and exit the field too quickly, in many cases the changes you made don’t stick and you have to re-enter the content/redo the edit. I use to write the labels and URL in Word where I manage my templates and then I copy and paste the content into the template fields. It happened to me a lot that the changes didn’t stick. Then I figured out that if I waited a moment before leaving the field after the content had been pasted, so the tool had the opportunity to save my changes, the issue was solved. Since then I don’t have these issues anymore unless I’m too hasty. This affects only the changes within the fields, tho.
In regard to the layer selection issue, I was wrong with my slower approach hint. In this case, you have to get the focus out of the label/URL fields in order to solve the issue. For that, you just have to click on any empty spot on either the left layer bar or the right tool bar. See my reply above yours.
This has been annoying me FOREVER! I finally figured out that it works fine if you click on the actual text or design element itself, rather than on the layer list. So I’ve been doing that.
