Do we get charged a Marketing fee for a self referred product also? If yes, why?

the short answer is - YES, BUT … it’s only because your referral percentage is now tied to whatever your royalty rate percentage was. So it has to be applied to figure out your referral, but it’s offset later on in the math… Confused yet? So it’s going to look like you were charged the marketing fee in your royalties, but it will be offset by the referral.

This was a digital download sale with a self refferal and a 45% marketing fee was deducted… just don’t understand the reasoning behind this…

This is correct. If we are talking about a “clean” Self-Promo referred sale, the breakdown shows the Marketing Royalty Fee being deducted but it’s not actually effecting your earnings.
We have to stop thinking about Self-Promo sales the old way where you got a Royalty % minus fees plus a 35% Referral.
Under the new way, total earnings will be 35, 40, 45, or 50% of the total paid by the customer, less the Excess Royalty Fee when applicable. How it’s broken up between royalty/referral doesn’t matter so looking at the fees under your Royalty breakdown section is just an exercise in frustration.
On this type sale, your net Royalty + Referral + Excess Royalty Fee will equal the 35-50% of total customer paid. If we look at that way it’s actually pretty simple. We just have to ditch the old mindset.

So with digital downloads, because the royalty % is so high, it messes the calculations up. A lot of us had hoped it was just a glitch and that Z would exclude them from the new system, but it seems not. This is a real point of contention for me personally because I create my own artwork and had reservations about offering them as downloads in the first place. The high royalty made it worth it in the end … only to have them thrown into the new fee system. Feels like a real bait and switch. I raised my royalties on them and do still sell some of them. I’ve stopped promoting them completely though because what’s the point…
