Marketplace Challenges

Zazzle’s marketing fees have undeniably reduced royalties, making it harder to reach the same payout levels as before. At the same time, search algorithms now seem to prioritize fresh content and trend‑aware designs. In my opinion, shops that don’t adapt risk fading into the background. This shift has created a divide in the community: some creators resist change and focus on frustration, while others adjust their workflows and continue to earn. The difference often comes down to whether a shop owner is willing to evolve with art trends.

Why Evolution Matters : Adaptability is the key to sustainability. Artists who experiment with new styles and workflows are better equipped to handle marketplace changes. Titles, descriptions, mockups, and SEO are just as important as the art itself.  In my own shop, I’ve evolved from photography to watercolor illustrations, then digital art, and now AI‑created products. Offering all of these has kept my store aligned with trends, and sales continue to come in. That mix of tradition and innovation has helped me stay visible and relevant, even as the marketplace shifts. Earnings may be lower than before marketing fees, but the consistency proves that evolving with art trends is essential for long‑term success. Staying profitable on Zazzle depends on evolving with art trends and maintaining strong presentation standards. Photography, illustration, and digital workflows can all succeed when listings are optimized and aligned with current demand.

Have you leaned more toward traditional product designs (photography, illustration, digital art), or embraced newer approaches like AI‑generated designs?

What strategies have helped you adapt to Zazzle’s marketing fees and algorithm changes?

Do you think presentation (titles, descriptions, mockups, SEO) matters more than the art itself, or should it always be secondary?

How do you balance staying true to your creative style with following marketplace trends?

What changes would you like to see from Zazzle to better support creators?

This discussion is based on my own research, hands‑on testing in my store, and personal opinion. I’m sharing what has worked for me, not presenting universal facts. Your experience may differ, and that’s exactly why I’d like to hear how others are navigating these marketplace changes.

I’ve done it all, from photography to vector art to digital painting to AI. I often combine these.

No strategies.

I think the art/design itself is the most important part since it’s what the customer actually buys. But the other things you listed are what allows the art to surface. Without good tags, it is invisible. And eye catching mockups might keep it from being clicked past once it surfaces. Now that AI has entered the mockup world, I have embraced the odd. I have no idea if this is a good strategy or not but it does get employed by various ad agencies and those ads do catch my eye.

I niche down. There are sub-markets for anything.

Do the wild, game-changing changes in January-March so all the wrinkles are ironed out by the time people get back to serious shopping.

I keep true to my personal values and preferences and find upcoming trends that I feel comfortable fitting in with them. Some trends and popular items I just don’t get into the hype that doesn’t last anyway.  I find inspiration on other sites of things that pique my interest and create my own version which sometimes is better.  I too have started using ai, and its hit and miss as far as accuracy and quality.  Overall I just try to have fun with it.
