So last year I started a youtube channel for my art process videos and only got one up, but I am trying to do better and I’ve uploaded a little 3 part series of time lapse process videos for my latest artwork. One is a YouTube short (under a minute) and the other 2 are about 6 minutes each. I am going to be adding this piece to products on Zazzle in the next few days. I hope to be regularly creating and filming. It’s a bit of a learning curve as I teach myself how to edit the videos and I think they will get better as I go.
I am also on TikTok (I just joined a few days ago and have a handful of videos- one with subtle product placement, lol) and the process videos on there are under a minute. If anyone here is on TikTok or YouTube and likes art process videos, I would love it if you checked them out!
Hi Malissa, I just watched your YouTube video. I’ve always loved your artwork, and watching it unfold in a video was interesting to see for sure! I have one constructive comment: At the end of the video I forgot, and wondered, what the artwork looked like at the beginning of the video. So what I would do is, after you showed the end result, finish the video with a ‘before’ and ‘after’ still image in one frame.
But otherwise… loved watching it. I found the music well chosen, relaxing and adding to the experience. I envy your talent
Awww, thanks so much for taking the time to watch and for the lovely compliment! You always make me feel good about my art. Most of the time the before will probably be a blank sheet of paper, but where I’ve split up the process, like on these, that is a great idea.
Malissa, I just watched your latest video and found it very enjoyable!
Wondering: What if you slowed down to normal speed periodically and zoomed in on something specific–say, the shading over the eyes–to see precisely what you’re doing, then speeding back up. It could break up the consistent pace. There’s a professional clothing designer I enjoy watching who does things of that sort, and it works to hold a viewer’s attention because of the detail being shown.
I love watching such process videos, so keep it up!
Slowing things down in places is definitely one of the next things I want to try. As far as zooming, I may have to use a second camera if I can’t do it in the editing software, but that kind of thing would elevate the quality of the video. A lot of the other artists I watch do that as well as show the supplies they are using. As an artist I am interested in the supplies, I’m not sure if others care about that or not so that’s not on the top of my list.
I’ve seen people using a second camera for zooming, but it would be great if you could do it right in the software so you don’t have to juggle things.
I looked at your description of the supplies after I was done with the video, but if you think about it, the people most interested in your videos are likely to be artists or at least people with an art hobby.

The process is all about trial and error and just going with the flow. I never start with a plan and definitely enjoy the process. It is why I make art. Thanks so much for watching and your nice comment!
Malissa, I just now watched your newest video. You’ve made a big jump! You showed a huge amount of your art in an amazingly short amount of time, and I only wish you’d shown more of it. I love the work you do. The negative was that you ended it abruptly. Maybe you could have gently left with one of your works showing on screen and then fading out to your Zazzle store name. But really, you do great work!
Thanks Barbara! It was mainly a super quick reel I created for Instagram and TikTok for the Zazzle contest, but since YouTube also has the “shorts” options I added it there too just for content. I’m going to make some more longer flip through videos and show my art journals and talk about some of the pieces in future videos now that I have one video out there with my voice on it and hopefully I can get the nervous edge out of it next time! I cringe so bad at hearing my own voice so it was kind of a hard one to make myself post. lol
You sounded perfectly fine, but then I’ve never heard you speak before. Also and for some reason, even when we speak normally and don’t know we’re begin recorded, we don’t sound right to ourselves, doubtless because we hear ourselves both coming into our ears and internally. The first time I did a video with my voice-over, I was sure there was something wrong with the sound system. “Do I really sound like that? No, impossible!” After that first experience, I was told to imagine I was talking to someone I know–friend, family member, whatever–and it helped a lot.
