I’ve noticed a few products on Zazzle that seem to use typography that is called (as best I can figure out) “PhotoPop Bold” or just “PhotoPop.” Certainly, it is not a type selection from Zazzle. Whatever it is, it allows large
Sampletype (text) to block out the background so that the text appears laid on top of it. But the main figure (usually a person) appears on top of the text. An interesting concept and one this old man would like to try and use. Anyone who is familiar with this - would you be willing to share where to get the software and/or how it is done? Appreciate it. Have also included a sample product image of what I am referring to.I think it’s because it is a Zazzle direct item. All of the ones I’ve clicked into are Zazzle’s. It does give us a sell button, but I haven’t tried making one myself.
You would need a program such as Adobe Photoshop (at least that’s the one I use, but I’m sure there are others out there). The different elements like background, text and woman’s figure are all created on separate layers placed one on top of each other.
I have noticed that they all fall under the Photopop term that takes you to a landing page for them. However, you can make your own by using the same photo on two different layers. On the top layer you click on remove background. Then you can sandwich the text between the two layers to give it the “pop” look. However, I don’t think you can post it for sale like that as the customer would have to click the remove background button for the top photo to work. Also don’t know if Z would allow sellers to post products like these since they have a whole photopop landing page that seems like it is their product only…would love to know if designers could do these as I think they are really nice.
You’re layering can be done directly in Zazzle. 1. Add your background image. 2. Add your text 3. Add your single image. If you want to have any portion of it be customizable, you need to “mask” that item / layer. The only problem I have encountered when using the “masking” option, is that if the image that the buyer uploads is not formatted to the exact size of the “mask” they will still have to go in to edit using Zazzle’s editing, unmask the item and make their sizing adjustment. Which I am not sure they will be able to do this on their own, but maybe a lot of people could. I hope this helps!
your…layering.
I saw last winter that Zazzle was selling their own range of products called photo pop. The customer just had to give their picture with the person included and they would propose many predefined layouts with texts and this picture. Don’t know if it still exists as I didn’t check. To propose the same to you customers:
1 -The first layer in the background should be filled with the full customer picture (including people )
2 -The next layer should be the text
3 - The last layer at the top of the stack must be the same picture as the background, with using the “remove background” button to keep only the characters. The problem is : you can’t include the background removal in the template as it is implemented today and have to ask your customer to press themselves the “Remove Background” button. It can be difficult as we don’t have a lot of space now to explain them what to do.
Example :
Yes, that’s the catch. I tried clicking on a couple of those cards and putting my own photo in and the background is removed automatically. There is a tiny subtitle under the regular title that says PhotoPop. With high hopes I clicked on Create Your Own From Scratch but that just led to a regular invitation with no PhotoPop subtitle and background removal must be done by hand.
All in all, since it would depend on the customer implementing background removal themselves, not a good idea.
Definitely agree, it’s a little bit complex for a customer, but the effect can be used on your own non personalizable photos if you sell this kind of product, and not necessarily for people, it can be used for objects …
I tried to sell a few cards for Christmas where the customers should be placed in a Christmas Decor, so I asked them to use the “Remove Background” button, but I didn’t sell any. However, I’m not a specialist in card selling, so…

I have several designs like this. The only problem is that you have to warn the customer that they need to remove the background from the top layer, and we already know they don’t always read the instructions…
Thanks to all those who responded to this. Some responded with a solution using three layers (2 of the image that sandwich the text layer). This requires any designer to instruct the customer to remove the background from the top image (with the Design Editor option). Which, of course, does work (I’ve tried it). But the samples of PhotoPop designs I have tested, they do not require the customer to do that. They only replace the image. So, something is going on here that Zazzle does not seem to be letting all of us designers know about. It seems further inquiry is needed - directly from Zazzle. I intend to check into this further. Thanks again to all of you that responded.
There is more in Community about this under “What are PhotoPop cards?” There is a reference there to Zazzle’s explanation. https://www.zazzle.com/photopop+cards
I tested this and here is what I found. The instructions seem to be aimed only towards a customer. You add your photo in the space provided, then click “View my cards.” From here you are able to choose whether the card is for Christmas, Graduation, etc. Then use the Design Editor to make changes. It seems you can change the text that appears in the background but that does not cover the person’s image (wording but not sure about the type font). Once you have done all this, you can order cards but there is no option to sell the design. Thus, it appears this is an option that is provided to potential customers but not to designers. Perhaps we need to urge Zazzle to plan on offering this as an option to designers too.
