Hello, new user here. I actually created some artwork in Canva and would like to upload to Zazzle then add some customizable text to it. I don’t want the customer to be able to copy and paste the artwork. I only want to give them them option to change the “text”.
#1 - Is this possible to do?
#2 - I know how to upload and add a text box but what Toggles do I click on or off. I tried to click all of them but it wouldn’t let me click both - Make object(s) permanent and always visible and Make object a template.
How does this actually work? Or am I doing something wrong?
What kind of machine are you working with? I work mainly on iPad, and the lock functionality seems to be completely missing for me on this machine. If I could lock a layer in the design tool, the one with the image on it, the shopper would not be able to mess with that image.
You can prevent the customer from entering the design tool. Then they can only change what you have made into a template. When you publish the product, scroll all the way to the bottom of the publishing page. There will be a toggle that says Show Customize Button. It defaults to allow. If you toggle it off, the customer can’t get into the design tool.
2)To make your text a template, the toggle you want to click is Make Object a Template. You can verify this worked by clicking Done which takes you out of the design tool and into the product page. You should now see a box the customer can change to their own text.
Hi again Windy, I also use an ipad,along with my Mac. You are right about the ipad, what seems like a missing lock icon is really an icon that sort of blends into the background of the button. Hard to see. Try select all, lock everything, then select none, and unlock the text. When you select all you will also be able to see if there are any unlocked layers in the design area.

I don’t think I can see any locks which blend into the background, and yes, I can sometimes get the icon to show. But when I have the icon showing, it does not have the effect of locking the layer and if I then click on another layer the lock icon disappears. I am totally baffled as to whether i am supposed to be able to use this functionality on the iPad, or how I would do it. Am I missing something, @idraw ?

The only thing i’ve used canva for was to make thumbnails for my blog posts so I could have something nice looking to share to pinterest. If you’re looking for a free photo editting software you can check out GIMP, for being free its pretty good for what I need it for.

the simpler answer is No, you shouldn’t be using it…
In the link Col has provided, see section 9. Prohibited uses, Things you many not do subsection 5 - Use or display the Content on a standalone basis on websites or other venues designed to induce or involving the sale, license or other distribution of “on demand” products, including postcards, mugs, t-shirts, posters and other items; While the Canva platform itself does appear to use some CCO licensed materials, it would likely be best to just go to the sources of those things rather than try to sort out what in Canva is safe or not…

Windy, It’s tricky, for sure. I see the top one locked. So select all and click the top one, it should unlock it. Then select all again, lock em all. Then select none. Click on the text layer, and unlock it. Done deal. Should work for you now. I had to figure it out maybe about a couple of years ago. It’s maddening. Try it again and get back to me w/results. ( or my twisted humor, get a locksmith,locksmith scratches head, mumbles what am I supposed to do with this?)
Can you really see lock icons there which are just blending into the background? I can’t see anything like that at all.
I am trying your method…it takes me a good 15 or 20 clicks to get one layer to lock. Then when I select all the layers, it will unlock that first layer, and another layer will spontaneously lock. Maybe. If I am lucky. Mostly nothing I do to any layer will result in any layer locking. I do find it easier to simply get off my tush and head over to the desktop, where locking is easy. But mostly I just don’t mess around trying to do any layer locking.
Hi Sara, I have my own art uploaded into Canva which I pulled my designs together. Yeah, doing digital is a big no-no using Canva elements. You can use their elements if you choose to for Printed items only. No digital anything though. You are right for sure!

You have to make sure that you have done select all layers,then see whether you have any locked. Unlock if any are. Then while all layers selected. Lock all layers. You’ll know when they are locked bks looking at the design area you won’t see any dotted line scalable “boxes”. While layers still selected,select none. Then unlock the text layer. All other layers will stay locked. The scalable dotted line box will now only be active for the unlocked text layer. Once you get the method, it,s easy, just a little pita, we have brought up the hard to see locks on the new forum, so tech is aware.
Note—Are you using an Apple Pencil or your finger. The pencil seems to be far more accurate and responsive to locking on the iPad, I noticed that myself. Also, I agree with you I try to avoid using my iPad for creating products on zazzle, too frustrating compared to using the computer.
Hi Carrie. You mentioned that you are new so I wanted to suggest that you check Canva’s TOU’s to make sure that it’s okay to post designs made on Canva. I know that their templates are definitely not allowed. Just FYI. You may have already done that. No shade. Just trying to be helpful.

Thanks so much! Yep, I did get ahold of Canva’s team. Their policies have been rewritten so they are much clearer than before. I wanted to make absolutely sure that I am not in violation of using them in any way shape or form. Yes, the templates or any digital anything is a definite no. I appreciate the tip and help very much! It’s nice to think someone respectfully has your back! Thanks again!
May I ask what examples you mean by ‘digital anything?’ I am confused as to what they are. I emailed Canva and they said it was fine to use my designs as long as the elements are ‘correctly altered’ from the original. Are the elements not digital? I am just confused about the whole licensing situation.
