We Need Clarity on Why Referrals Are Not Credited

I know this topic has been brought up many times, but I wanted to raise it again because it continues to be an issue.

There are still situations where referral links are clearly being used, yet the sales are not showing up as referrals. For those of us who are actively promoting our own products, this creates a lot of uncertainty. It becomes very difficult to know what is working and what is not, especially when we are putting time and effort into driving traffic.

At this point, I think most of us understand that there are rules behind how referrals are tracked. The challenge is that those rules are not always visible from our side, so when something does not track, we are left guessing.

Even something simple would help. If there were an indicator or note explaining why a referral was not credited, it would make a big difference. It would give creators clarity, help us adjust our approach, and build more trust in the system.

Right now, the lack of feedback is what makes this so difficult to navigate.

The continued lack of feedback on this issue is apalling.

I would like to add a broader perspective on this issue, as it has direct implications for both creators and Zazzle’s overall growth.

Many creators are actively driving external traffic through platforms like Pinterest and Instagram, effectively serving as a distributed marketing channel for Zazzle. However, when referrals are not credited and there is no visibility into why, it limits our ability to evaluate performance and make informed decisions.

From a business standpoint, this lack of transparency creates friction. When creators cannot clearly connect effort to outcome, it naturally reduces the level of promotion, testing, and investment we are willing to sustain over time.

Even a simple attribution indicator, such as session expired or alternate referral source, would provide meaningful clarity. With that insight, creators could optimize how we share links, guide customer behavior more effectively, and scale the channels that are already demonstrating demand.

Greater transparency would lead to more confident promotion, more consistent external traffic, and ultimately more high-intent buyers entering the platform. In that sense, this is not just a reporting enhancement. It is a lever for increasing overall sales volume and strengthening the creator-driven growth model that Zazzle relies on.

Looks like this thread is being ignored. Just like all the ones (many) before. The continued ignoring of issues that designers are dealing with, does not exactly encourage promoting anything Zazzle.

@SORS  This is a recurring inquiry that we have addressed extensively. To provide a definitive resolution on why a referral link may not have functioned as expected, please note the following:

  • Resources: We have provided a comprehensive list of common hurdles in our FAQ , available at our Help Center https://help.zazzle.com/hc/en-us/articles/37460907460631-Ambassador-Program-FAQs-Creator

  • Data Limitations: We cannot provide data that does not exist which is why we categorize referral sources into three distinct groups: Self , 3rd Party , and None (meaning it was either organic or there is no data).

  • The Customer Journey: Attribution is strictly dictated by the customers journey. Factors such as cross-device purchasing , the use of incognito/private browsing , or active tracking blockers can prevent a referral from being recorded.

We appreciate that it would be beneficial to everyone to have a more in depth overview for every purchase, and we’re constantly looking for new ways to improve, gather and share what information we can.

Thank you for your feedback.

Thank you, James. Considering the number of hurdles and steep drop-off of referrals being credited, has Zazzle considered a different solution altogether for tracking links and credited referrals?

In my situation, my Pinterest numbers have quadrupled this year, but my Zazzle referrals dropped off a cliff. I used to get very roughly 1-2 per month, but I’ve received none since November. I post Zazzle pins daily and have averaged around 120K views per month in recent months.

Thank you. That does explain a lot. I appreciate that.

I purchased from my own shop last night from my own links.  If there were a way to see on my order that my very own links on my own social to my own product would not only not pay the 10% royalty but would actually benefit some unknown 3rd party. Who? It seems Zazzle could be more clear at least when we place our own orders. Where is the benefit for me as a creator ordering from Zazzle? I’m searching for other printers now where I can be assured of the final cost to me without having the mystery of the referral bonus.  Maybe I just don’t know how to play this game. Any clarity would help.

James,

What Zazzle has NEVER addressed is why referrals that go to Zazzle aren’t classified as 1st Party, which they are, but are instead glommed together with actual nonrelated 3rd party referrers.  That lack of transparency where Zazzle won’t provide a split has always seemed shady, at least to me.  I know from scores of posts that there are many others who want this information. Why has this never been addressed?  Why is zazzle hiding this information behind a miscategorized 3rd party label?

James thank you for taking time out to explain this to us. It beats the impression nobody was listening and obviously, you were :slightly_smiling_face:  May I ask if there is any change my post related to displaying our actual Net royalty (after the 45% ADV fee is taken out etc.)  to reflect our true net royalty in the royalty calculator etc.

These days I am SOOO grateful when I see a referral come through usually as a result of my own efforts.
