I’ve seen a section for ‘PhotoPop’ cards. What are they and how do we design for them? How are they different from the usual flat 7x5 holiday cards?
Looks to me like one of those special programs that you had to be invited to participate in.
In terms of what they are - it looks like they use the same photo on two layers but the top photo has the background removed. Then there’s text and/or other design elements between the two photo layers, so the people in the photo appear to “pop” out of the photo. I can replicate the concept in the design tool, but I can’t figure out how to get it to automatically remove the background from the top photo - so there’s either some trick to it, or it’s a feature that’s only available to designers in that program.
Either way, I don’t think you can have your designs included in the special section unless you’re in the program.

The link gives this simple explanation (add a photo)----
Capture. Create. PhotoPop.
Your story comes to life with PhotoPop cards from Zazzle
_ Add your photo _ in seconds, and then use our easy to use _ design tool to adjust _!
Testing it and found it to be hard to use. So much for the simple explanation.
Thank you 🙂
@Cat Thank you 🙂
I also tested this. The instructions seem to be aimed only towards a customer. You add your photo in the space provided, then click “View my cards.” From here you are able to choose whether the card is for Christmas, Graduation, etc. THEN use the Design Editor to make changes. It seems you can change the text that appears in the background (wording but not sure about the typefont) but not covering the person’s image. Once you have done all this, you can order cards but there is no option to sell the design. Thus, it appears this is an option that is provided to potential customers but not to designers.
Do you know if they are allowing other designers to create them yet?
No. They are not yet available to designers. At present, all these cards are proprietary cards for Zazzle only. Most, if not all are done in cooperation with their many officially licensed companies or organizations such as Disney, Dr. Seuss, etc. Naturally, those organizations do not want a multitude of Zazzle designers working on their cards. There is a workaround for Zazzle creators though. It requires a bit of work by the customer on the Design Editor once they click on “Personalize this design.”. I am working on a video that I plan to post on YouTube that explains the problem and shows the customer the easy way to deal with the designer’s workaround. Wil let you know as soon as I get this video finished and online.
A lot of dialogue on this subject, including some of my own. I have created a YouTube video that explains what happens when designers like myself create a workaround to Zazzle’s PhotoPop cards. Obviously, some designers have discovered how to do this, but the customer has to participate to make the design work. My video tells them what has happened and how to deal with in order to get the card they want. Here is the YouTube link. https://youtu.be/77JX27o_b1A?si=Emqu2pKeW0kba9dV
Would appreciate comments on this. I am not, as I mentioned in the video, not a pro at producing videos. But I hope this one will be helpful.
I am in the process of reworking this video and making it shorter (especially the first part) and making it more succinct. Also, I might mention that this is not a special group that you need to be invited into. The design of all these cards is done in cooperation with organizations that Zazzle has an exclusive license for (such as Disney, for example). Naturally, these groups don’t want a multitude of independent designers touching their exclusive designs.
Reworked video done. The first 4:40 deals with what PhotoPop is and lets customers know that any problem that arises over disappearing text (when they upload their own photo) is not a problem created by an independent designer. The last 2:40 shows how easy the customer can resolve it. View YouTube video here: https://youtu.be/UigLOzqp1wE
