How long does it take for new subcategories to show their contents?

OK, admittedly, it has been a while since I've added a subcategory to any of my shops. 

I click on my main category in store management, everything is there. When I click on the new subcategories in the left hand sidebar, the subcategories are empty. When I click on edit details, the item is listed in the subcategory. 

I can't remember how long it takes for items to show up in a new category. Am I having a senior moment here or what?

@Nightmareartist when indexing is on a go slow - it could take up to 72 hours for the sub cats to appear - possibly longer.  I would create them, edit the products to appear then wait and don't worry about it

I would also create a new product especially for that sub cat just to kick start it (as opposed to moving other products to it)

Still have to wait for the site to catch up though. Happy days
