It’s been a few months since I last brought this question up and it still has not been resolved. Are the Bone China Mugs really bone china (porcelain), or are they ceramic? The product description says they are made of strong ceramic. If this is the case, then the product name is very misleading. Could we please have clarification on this very important issue for once and for all? Thank you!
I have one of these mugs and they are Bone China. That is they are made with porcelain clay. They are much finer than ‘the bog standard’ mugs (thinner lip) and have a translucent quality Ceramic simply means made of clay, and china clay, earthenware, stoneware are all different types of clay.
Both porcelain and ceramic are clay-based and kiln-fired, but porcelain is made from a higher-grade clay and fired at a higher temperature. Porcelain is denser, harder, and less porous than ceramic
