I was surprised to see that I could click the pencil icon on another user’s post and view all of their edits. Most people use the edit function to fix grammar, remove something they didn’t mean to say, or clean up wording. Those changes shouldn’t be publicly visible.
There are real pros to making edits private: it protects the writer, prevents misunderstandings, and keeps the focus on the final version of the post instead of the mistakes along the way. It also encourages people to correct typos or clarify their thoughts without worrying that every revision is being tracked and displayed.
The downside of public edits is that it exposes things the user intended to remove, including accidental wording, personal details, or comments they reconsidered. It also makes the forum feel less safe to post in, because you don’t have full control over what remains visible.
In my opinion, edits should be private. The final version of the post should be what the community sees, not the entire editing history.
I agree. Most of my edits are typos and grammar. I also learned on the “Show Me” posts, you are advised that you’ve already posted a product (link). This is helpful. So who cares to see edits like that?
Definitely agree! NO one should be able to see and read someone else’s edits to any of their posts, whether via clicking on the pencil icon like you found out about, nor any other way! That’s ridiculous. That should remain strictly private!
ETA: A mod needs to contact tech or whatever department responsible to have them look into this and disable it! Like Susan said, only the final post that was published by someone should be what’s readable to others, NOT any saved edits before it was published. Talk about invasion of privacy. Geez
