Question about the cookie time window

Is a cookie renewed if a customer clicks on a link/ad from the same referrer (regardless of whether it’s an ambassador or Zazzle), later in the 14 day window, or the 45 day window?

So, as an example, which of these scenarios is the correct one:

Jan 1: customer X clicks on Referrer A’s link/ad and that cookie gets activated
Jan 8: customer X clicks on another of Referrer A’s links/ads
Jan 15: A’s cookie is no longer protected (but active)
Jan 17: customer X clicks on Referrer B’s link/ad, replacing A’s cookie, and buys something.
= Referrer B’s gets the referral

or

Jan 1: customer X clicks on Referrer A’s link/ad and that cookie gets activated
Jan 8: customer X clicks on another of Referrer A’s links/ads and the cookie gets renewed, turning day 8 into day 1 of the protected 14 day window
Jan 17: customer X clicks on Referrer B’s link/ad and buys something
= Referrer A’s gets the referral

I’m also wondering what happens with the marketing fees if a customer clicks on Designer A’s clean link, gets their cookie, and then buys Designer B’s product. Does Designer B still have marketing fees deducted from their royalties and the sale show as 3rd party, even though Designer A doesn’t receive the referral?

Hi @E_K

When a customer clicks your referral link, two windows start at that first click:

  • 14-day protection window. For the first 14 days, the referral stays with you even if the customer clicks another creator’s link.
  • 45-day referral window. Your link can earn a referral for up to 45 days after the first click.

A few details to keep in mind:

  • Both windows start with the original click. If the customer clicks your link again later, the protection window does not restart.
  • After day 14, your referral is no longer protected. If the customer clicks a different creator’s link during that time, the referral moves to that link.
  • If the customer doesn’t click anyone else’s link, you can earn the referral on purchases made up to 45 days after the original click.

Example: A customer clicks your link on day 1. Through day 14, the referral is yours no matter what other links they click. If they click another creator’s link on day 20, that creator earns the referral. If they never click another link, you can earn the referral on purchases through day 45.

Thank you so much for the answer!

Regarding my second question. I do find it highly unlikely that such a sale would be listed and treated as a 3rd party sale for Designer B, since there’s no reason for it, but it would be nice to have it confirmed. I have read the FAQ, but if it was addressed I missed it. Thank you again!
