I am a dual US-Italian citizen, and I moved abroad to Italy in July 2025. I no longer have a mailing address in the United States. I am wondering how do I get my 1099 this year? Is there any way to receive it electronically? @James can you or another moderator please help me?
—-> Form 1099s will be mailed: (i) to recipients at the end of January of each year and (ii) to the address listed in the payment settings section within your Zazzle account.
If I haven’t received my Form 1099, what do I do?
Please double check the following information:
If the total amount of any Earned and Payable Earnings Payments you received from Zazzle during the previous calendar year does not meet either of the above-referenced thresholds, a Form 1099 will not be sent to you, as we are not required to report this to the IRS. (Not receiving payment? Confirm you have followed these instructions correctly.)
_ —->We mail your Form 1099 to the address specified in your Zazzle payment settings. If this was incorrect at the start of January, then it’s possible it went to your old address. Please correct your address in your Zazzle payment settings, and contact us to have a Form 1099 sent to your current address. _
Tax Forms for International Creators and Ambassadors (Form 1042) >>
Why do I get a Form 1042 from Zazzle?
Zazzle is required to issue a Form 1042-S to international Creators and Ambassadors. The Form 1042-S is an informational form detailing any monetary amounts given to a person who does not have a U.S. Social Security number or Employer Identification Number.
Is there a threshold to receive a Form 1042?
No. Any Earned and Payable Earnings payments received from Zazzle will qualify you to receive a Form 1042.
When will I receive my Form 1042?
We mail out your Form 1042 in early March, to the address listed in the payment settings section within your Zazzle account.
I haven’t received my Form 1042, what do I do?
Please double check the following information:
If you have not successfully received any Earned and Payable Earnings, you will not receive a Form 1042. (Having trouble getting paid? Have you submitted your W8 form? More details here.)
We mail your Form 1042 to the address specified in your Zazzle payment settings. If this was incorrect at the start of January, then it’s possible it went to your old address. Please correct your address in your Zazzle payment settings, and contact us to have a Form 1042 sent to your current address.
Hi! Sorry this is a bit off-topic, but I hope you don’t mind me asking you something
I saw that you moved to Italy and I’m planning a similar move, so I’m trying to understand how things work with Zazzle and taxes after relocating.
In Poland, in some cases it’s possible to report this kind of online income without registering a business, and I’m in a situation where I can legally do that — which makes things much simpler and more cost-effective. Because of that, my Zazzle account is set up as an individual with my personal tax ID.
I’ve read that in Italy this type of online income is often treated as a business activity that requires opening a Partita IVA, so I wanted to ask about your experience:
How did things change for you after moving to Italy in terms of the legal/tax side of selling on Zazzle?
Did changing your tax ID or tax details in Zazzle affect your listings in any way?
For example, visibility, rankings, or sales history. I’m a bit worried that updating tax information or country could impact the account.
Do you know if it’s possible to just update the address, country, and Italian tax ID (Codice Fiscale) in Zazzle, but handle taxes in Italy separately with an accountant — if opening a business is required there to report the income legally?
In other words, keep the Zazzle account as “individual” on the platform side, but report the income in Italy under a business structure if necessary.
I know every situation is different, but even a general idea of how it worked for you would help me a lot. Thank you so much!
Thank you for this response @idraw . I definitely meet the threshold limits, and my address on file is the one I where I live in Italy. I am wondering why we can’t download these forms directly from the website, which would save everyone the headache of using paper mail, which is not reliable, especially in the area where I live. I am hoping a moderator can provide further information as to whether we can receive these forms electronically. Thanks for your help.
Hi @OliandFleurs . I am just now opening up a Partita Iva and will be doing everything with an Italian accountant who is an expert in US-Italian tax laws, as I am a dual citizen. I am a single mom with three dependent children, so it is crucial for me to get everything correct. I am not a tax expert by any means, but once you are living in Italy for more than 183 days, you will be taxed by Italy regardless of where your business is set up. The best thing to do is to find an accountant here to get your Partita Iva opened. There are tax assistance offices that helps residents with taxes and bureaucracy (they are know as CAF - Centro Assistenza Fiscale). I highly recommend visiting one. If your situation is straight forward, you can probably just use their services. If it is more complex, like mine is, I recommend you find a professional.
I don’t think anything has changed with regard to ranking, visibility or sales, and as of now, I continue to be paid in dollars through Paypal, which then goes to my bank in the US (I use a bank for military families). However, I imagine all of this will change once I speak with my accountant.
Taxes are never easy anywhere, but that is especially the situation in Italy. Be sure to find a professional. It will be the best money you have spent. Hope that helps.
Hi, thank you so much for your reply. It helped me a lot. I agree with you 100% that it is best to handle all these formalities with an accounting office.
Right now I am just at the very beginning of this journey. Before we actually move, it will probably still be another 2 to 3 years, but I am already making an initial plan and doing research because there are so many things to figure out. On top of that, we are also looking for a house, so that process alone is already quite a challenge And of course learning the language hehe :)) Time is definitely flying by!
I am a mom of two little ones myself, so I admire you even more and keep thinking, wow, how do you manage it all! Three kids, moving to another country, and on top of that such a beautiful Zazzle shop!
Also, about your question regarding the form, it reminded me that last year I needed Form 1042 for my tax filing, and it did not arrive by regular mail either. Since the tax deadline was getting close, I emailed Zazzle Support and they sent me the form by email. I hope this might help in your situation too.
Thank you again for your help. From the bottom of my heart I wish you and your children some real, deep rest now, in the fullest sense of the word. I can only imagine how much energy you must have put into this big change. I wish you nothing but sunny days ahead, which I hope are just around the corner May this new chapter be a beautiful adventure full of sunshine, peace, and wonderful people along the way.
Thank you for your kind words about my shop. You have beautiful products as well!
Yes, moving across an ocean by yourself with three kids and a dog while trying to run a business is no small feat! Thankfully, you do not have change continents. That will make it a tiny bit easier. Definitely learn the language. Many younger Italians speak English, but most people in their 40s and up are not very fluent, and navigating Italian bureaucracy is definitely not for the feint of heart!
Do you know where you will be living? I live in the Le Marche Region in Central Italy and love it, but I love living away from big cities, although we do have plenty of towns and villages and are only an hour from good size cities.
Thanks for the information about contacting Zazzle. I have had someone from their support reach out to me asking for me to submit a W-8BEN form, but it turns out she was incorrect! Thankfully, I verified this with Chat GPT and Google Gemini. Anyway, I will reach out to them again to ask for an electronic version of the 1099 NEC form that they are supposed to send me.
Thank you for your kind wishes. I wish you well with your move. Make sure to take things slowly and breathe. Reach out if you ever need a hand!
Thank you so much for your support. The region you live in is absolutely beautiful. All of Italy is stunning, and I think no matter what you choose, it will always be a great decision.
As for us, we’re looking in the province of Palermo in Sicily, somewhere a bit outside of town near a smaller village. We’d like to be reasonably close to Palermo itself, about 30–50 minutes away, while still having a small town nearby for everyday needs. We definitely want to avoid a big city, and even a town center. We’re hoping for a peaceful place a little off the beaten path, but not completely isolated.
All of Italy is beautiful, but what really draws us to Sicily is the much milder winters compared to the rest of the country, and that’s one of our main deciding factors. My husband runs a business related to home heating systems and solar energy, so he has a bit of an obsession with the sun
We’re generally very open to different scenarios and are considering many options, even the possibility that we might just buy a vacation home there. Time will tell.
As for Italian bureaucracy, I imagine it might be similar to Poland, where in order to get something done, you first have to educate yourself on the topic so you can explain to the official what you actually need, and even then there’s no guarantee you’ve been understood correctly
Thank you again for your support, it truly means a lot to me. I’ll gladly reach out if I ever need anything
Hi, I’m italian and my only income are Zazzle royalties. There’s no need to open a partita iva in Italy if your income consists only of royalties. Online sellers who run a business online need to open a partita iva, but we are just designers who earn copyright royalties for creative works, we are individuals not business.
This is fascinating, Lucia. So, we can just earn money on Zazzle through royalties and not be officially in “business”? I have dual US-Italian citizenship, so I am trying to figure this out right now. I have an Etsy shop as well. Is that somehow different? Would you mind messaging me privately? Maybe you can share the name of your commercialista?
Hi,
thank you so much for this information. I have to admit I’m a bit confused now
So far, the only information I’ve received is that if income is regular, repeated, and continuous, then opening a Partita IVA is required, even if someone is a freelancer or an artist.
So if I understand correctly, you simply declare this income once a year in your annual tax return as personal income?
In Poland we have a fairly simple system and it’s possible to file everything online without using an accountant. When the income consists only of royalties, there is no need to register a business — even if you earn millions (I wish ). In simple terms, I just pay tax once a year on income from copyright royalties. However, if referral income is added, then unfortunately you must officially open a business. The same applies if you run an Etsy shop (even if you only sell digital files) — in that case, registering a business is required.
You mentioned that if the income is only royalties, running a business is not necessary — but how does it work in the case of referrals? Would it be necessary to register a business then?
Yes, I declare the royalties that Zazzle annually reports on my tax form. Those royalties comprehend referrals, already accounted for in my final income (whatever Zazzle actually pays me). It’s best to consult with a tax advisor for your individual situation, I’m certainly not a tax expert!
Thanks for your reply, it really helped I’m glad there’s a way to handle this without needing a Partita IVA — I hope that’ll be the case for me too. When the time comes, I’ll definitely have a lot to talk through with my commercialista
