I have to ask: Why is Elon Musk on Benable and why has he followed me? Has he or one of his employees set off a following bot on the platform? There’s nothing in my lists that would attract him. Anyone else with a Musk follower?
It is a scam person. I can’t tell you how many times a week ‘Elon’ messages me on telegram.

I received a follow notice from this so-called Elon also. I reported it to Benable as a fake account.
Just the other day, a fake “Tarek el Moussa” followed me on Instagram. When I reported the account as spam, I got a follow-up status that said, “that account is not breaking Instagram’s terms of service.” They let it slide on by, so that spammer can try to take advantage of someone else. What the heck?

I highly doubt it’s anyone but some person just using his name… I’ve seen other things like “Nike Store” or some such.. I don’t think they police that kind of thing much on their platform, at least not yet.

Everyone has confirmed my own reaction. The bigger question is how the scammer will benefit from this. I almost followed back to see what might up, but then I didn’t because I’m not sure we can unfollow someone.

That’s how they benefit. They trick people to Follow back. The goal is to amass enough Followers that you can sell the account to some entity that would benefit from having a large built-in audience of followers and then just change the name of the account. And then there’s just the old bait & switch, they trick you into following them so they show up on your feed and while the account name is Elon Musk noone notices that scrolling their feed, they just see the cool product image or video posted and click on it and now you have possible sales plus pay-per-click shenanigans … I don’t pretend to understand all the ins & outs, I just know it’s def a thing, imposter accounts always have a reason.

I have a cousin who got hacked on instagram by someone pretending to be Musk so it’s probably something like that.
