Hey folks, got a design related question here. Should background images be 300dpi or would it be acceptable to use the standard 96dpi? Does dpi count really matter for background images since most backgrounds are just "empty space"?

Dpi means dots per inch.

SimplyDesigned is correct about dpi. We designers work exclusively in ppi (pixels per inch). I consistently use 300 ppi because it's always safe.
