Using Images on Products

Hello all! I am new to Zazzle creating and I am wondering where you all get your images for your products/templates. I am wanting to sell products using images that catch the customers eye where they then can change them and fully customize them. How do you get your images on your products without violating copyright laws? I really need help! I want to become successful like all of you! Is Unsplash a good source? Please let me know what your thoughts are on this!

Take a close look at the Unsplash license. It says that the photos can't be used without significant modification.  That's going to take some software.

Things I have done to modify photos: vector trace, paint over, isolate elements and collage.

Another option is vintage public domain.  My go-to for that is New York Public Library which has a public domain collection: NYPL.

Another option is to straight up buy them. DesignBundles and CreativeFabrica both have add-on POD licenses, not too expensive.

The ideal is to make your own images. I make many of my own images but I am not an 18th century botanist so have used public domain vintage. I have also bought somethings here and there from the above sites and have modified photos from Unsplash and Pixabay.

People who can paint and sketch do so and scan those images. I'm pure software, Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. Many people use Gimp and Inkscape for free alternatives and PaintShop Pro is a less expensive alternative. I'm all over the place for images; a mix of purely made by me with vintage with modified from free sources that require modification (like Unsplash) and a bit purchased straight up with POD add-on license from the sites mentioned. Other people probably have a more focused approach.

I make my own graphics. Some places such as Creative Fabrica  have POD license for graphics you buy there. Some designers here also have some freebie graphics you can use on your products, I have some clock templates at www.StyleArtc.com/clock-numbers.html

That is super generous of you- thank you very much! I took a look at your CreativeFabrica shop. You have some super cute SVG’s! I have one question- the ones with multiple colors, like the birds, will they show up on Zazzle being able to change all the colors? I struggle with finding SVG’s that just aren’t all black once they get uploaded to Zazzle.

Thank you. Yes as long as they don't have more than 5 colors they should be able to change in Zazzle's designer tool

If you use free sites like Unsplash for PLACEHOLDER images, you have to contact each photographer to obtain a model release. The easiest thing is to buy them from stock photo sites that automatically require model releases for all the pictures of people. But some of those sites don’t allow Zazzle use even for placeholders, so you need to email the site and get confirmation that it is allowed. A lot of Zazzlers seem to get their placeholders from Deposit Photos and Adobe Stock, but since their terms change from time to time, it’s best to get your own confirmation in writing from those sites.

rawpixel has loads of CCO licence images and each image has a link to it's licence.

freeimage.net and pxhere are also useful.

We have gotten a message from Zazzle Content Review Team:

Unfortunately, it appears that your product, Wolfpack gear T-Shirt, contains content that is in conflict with one or more of our content guidelines.

We will be removing this product from the Zazzle Marketplace shortly.

I don't understand, how does Zazzle decide this? This is the logo from our computer game, of the same name.  This image is copyright by me.

You should start a new topic with a new question. In this case, it's the use of the word wolfpack that's the issue. It's the team name for North Carolina State, so they see it as a protected term. You'll have to make your case by responding to the email.
