I don’t know if this is a technical issue or maybe something from an A/B test, but this week I’ve received more messages from customers who did not realize they need to personalize the text for their items on their own. Then they message me and say “I just placed an order, I need it to say XYZ.” Or “I ordered XYZ but it has the display name, not mine. I didn’t know how to give that information.”
I personally thought the recent messaging change for personalization and using the design tool made it MORE obvious how things work, but somehow more customers are unsure about it within the past week to 10 days?
They aren’t on new items, I’ve checked my template setups, and are items others have ordered just fine for quite a while.
Has anyone else noticed this, a possible glitch/missing text entry areas for some reason/or did I just get into some vortex of people not reading instructions? LOL

Bwahahaha! "the vortex of people who don't read instructions" I've been there MANY times! The worst seem to be table numbers because people seem to assume that the numbers will be filled in automatically. I don't think anything has changed on Zazzle's end, at least I haven't been deluged with these sorts of requests any more than usual.
I recently changed my in-cart message to try to be as clear as possible in this regard, but trying to communicate without using actual words is a challenge (she says without the slightest hint of sarcasm.) Anyhow, here's what my in-cart message currently reads:
Thanks so much! I'm happy to help with any matching items you might need. NOTE: Orders cannot be modified once completed. If you need help with a design, please contact me BEFORE placing your order.
It seems like I've had fewer requests for customization after purchase since I did this... maybe... hopefully? It may be a coincidence though.

Things seem to come and go as vortexes sometimes LOL!
I've clarified my messaging even more, thanks for that suggestion, I forgot about those settings.
