Image Zazzle chooses for "Stores you may like" scroll on home page - ?

How is it chosen? It's always the same image. Mine's been the same since they rolled out the custom home page but it's not reflective at all of my style/niche.  The purple & green polka dots is an image I have used on a total of just 5 products, only one of which has ever sold (a tote bag back in May of 2021.)  I really dislike this image being used to represent my store and am wondering why on earth it is the one that was chosen. What algorithm is deciding this and is there anything we can do on our ends to influence what is used here?

Good question. Mine is at least one of my popular home decor designs, but if I could choose I would have picked one of my mandala designs.

I second that, my main store also has a picture that doesn’t really represent my store or main niche.

This is interesting. I never saw my shops recommended for me so I don't even know what pic is chosen for them; would be nice to know and would be nice if we could just create thumbnails for our stores just like we do banners and logos.

Wow thank you so much @ColsCreations  🌹 Well, I am in the same boat then. This design only exists on a t-shirt and was sold 3 times, while I have more appealing and selling designs.

It's a puzzler. The algorithm chose a rose I did when I was just learning vector. It isn't that good and unsurprisingly only sold once. As my vector skills increased, so did the popularity of subsequent designs. I have vector electric guitars that sold on >1000 masks and a William Morris vectorization that has sold many times on many different products. Either of those would have been a better choice and ought to have come up in the algorithm since they have far higher views and sales (anything higher than 1 is higher than that terrible rose). My vector rose skills have also greatly improved and subsequent roses have sold far more. But no. The algorithm reached back into the archives to find something ancient that sold once and hasn't been viewed since.

Where are you guys seeing this? My home page doesn't have anything like this.

That is very interesting, I went to the home page to see what you were talking about and I didn't see "stores you might like" all I saw was "products you might like" and they seemed to be picked out based on recent product designs I had posted (mushrooms)

I'm very curious now what image my store shows as well, wish I knew were to go to see it!

KeegansCreation

Maybe it's an A/B test.

Here is the layout of my Home page, scrolling from top to bottom:

The main graphic with the day's promo (today it is Stay Connected)

A Welcome Back scroll with hotlinks relevant to designers (I assume customers don't have this)

Recently Viewed

Trending From Stores You Follow

Recommended For You (individual products based on recent activity, Ijust made backpacks so it's recommending me more backpacks)

Pattern Wrapping Paper You Might Like (this changes constantly, it is always different versions of something I just looked at)

Vintage Postcards You Might Like (same as above, it must have noticed that I posted a vintage postcard in an Affiliate Request thread and then looked at the vintage things other designers posted)

Stores You May Like (must be an A/B test if only half of us see this. It starts with my store and the unwelcome thumbnail that is the thread subject, The other stores change frequently and generally include a mix of stores that were featured in the day's promo, which I always click on, and stores of designers in the forum because we are always interacting with each other)

Customer Favorites (random products)

Celebrate Black History Month (next month it will probably be St. Patrick's Day)

Explore Our Gift Guides

Personalize Your Wedding

and then it goes on with various promos which we probably all share since they aren't curated to user interaction.

Very Interesting! Here's what I've got:

  • Welcome Back
  • Saved Designs
  • Recently Viewed
  • Recommended for You
  • Dusty Blue Envelopes (guess what I was working on!)
  • Elegant Wedding Envelopes you might like (again, related to what I've been working on)
  • Customer Favorites
  • Black History Month
  • Explore our Gift Guides
  • Personalize Your Wedding
  • Officially Licensed Merchandise
  • Be Inspired
  • Enjoy Special Offers

Hmmm... very interesting. I'd love to know which image they're using for my store!

I see that not only do you not have recommended stores, you also don't have Trending From Stores You Follow.  Of course if you don't follow any stores then that would be why. I follow a few of people I've run into on facebook.

Ha! I'm still not even sure what it means to follow someone's store!

I mostly follow stores that I like to promote from, it is an easy pathway to get to their stores and collections.

I gave you a kudos because I appreciate you posting this for me, but I wanted to give it a "horrified thumb" if that's possible because EEE GADS!!!! I think I designed that I love my dog t-shirt the first week or two that I was designing, when I didn't have a clue and was literally just tossing things out to see what stuck. Now I mostly do weddings. And maybe it's time for a new store logo too. Hmmmm....

I too have no idea what this is about. I spend the majority of my time at the backend of each store but I did try finding my main page.

Ugh!  I see what you are saying with my own page.  First of all it is recommending 4 stores to me that are already mine and two of those have terrible represenatative images showing. I did notice that they were of things that have sold multiple times recently though.

I also thought that the other random shops it it showing me would not be happy to see the images they have showing either.  Maybe a human needs to pick them so that at least the colors won't clash like they do with mine.

I have a turquoise logo and store theme and it is showing a popular red glitter design which looks awful together.   😑

I get this for two of your stores:

and then also this which I didn't recognize as one of yours at first:

omgosh!  my recycled vintage store looks the worst yet and there is no reason for that image to look that blurry...  I would be okay with it if it wasn't totally blurred out like that.  Here is a link to all the products with that pattern on them and if you zoom in to any of them they are clear as a bell.  https://www.zazzle.com/c/gifts?gp=256511896373399100

so my question to Zazzle is WHY does that image look so bad?  and who would want to browse a store with a cover image like that?  That has to be costing me sales.  😠

ETA: the only preview image that looks a little fuzzy when zoomed is the fleece blanket and even it doesn't look like that store thumbnail.

I just want to flag this @Scott or @James  and ask you guys to look into why my store image in  Cols' post above looks so terrible!  The store called Recycled Vintage Art  with the super blurry cover image is the one I am talking about.  Thank you.

hmm I wonder if i could see which image show for my store if i got on my mom's computer and her account 😁 I might have to try it! Although I could be dissapointed as everyone else seems unsatisfied with the image paired with their stores so far! so maybe its better not to know😂

I went to your store and viewed some products (clicked through to design tool on one) to try and make it appear in my Stores You May like scroll and it worked so here's your image:

You really lucked out! You've got a lovely image that totally matches your profile image over the top if it.

OH thank you ColsCreations!!! 💜

haha well I have redone the art they chose to use for my main shop,... but it is my most popular selling design right now so that makes sense, and it matches my little image really too so it works well enough. My woodland whimsy shop image could be better 🙄 but I don't do much with that shop so I'm not too fussed about it I guess.

Was going to delete the awful polkadot image from my image gallery to see if that would force a change even though it would still be on Zazzle in the five published products it's on. But then I thought, shoot,  it could end up choosing an even worse one. So I didn't. Maybe one of you all who feels like it couldn't get any worse could try it.

Store IconStore IconWebsite IconFacebook IconPinterest IconInstagram IconNight Cafe IconDiscord IconBuy Me a CoffeeOut of Stock List

Oh wow, wait ... Just looked in my image gallery and realized at some point in the past I already deleted all the images including the above offender that I used in that Purple & Green collection. So never mind the above, doesn't matter if the image is in your gallery anymore or not.

My new store literally only has three images used in it - a nativity scene, a flamingo photo,  and an .svg border. The nativity scene has somehow sold nine times to two different customers and that's what is being used for the store. But look closely - it's not just the image, it's the image plus the blue svg border, cropped to a square. So it's not choosing one of our image per se, but rather an image of an end design. Hmm.

I can't figure out where they are pulling that image for my RecycledVintageArt store. I have no products that design is on that look that bad... I checked on my own home page and it looks the same there too.  This makes me so sad! 😢

I would never post an image like that but this makes me look like I already did.

==So it's not choosing one of our image per se, but rather an image of an end design.

This is true, my Beekeper design consists of 4 text lines (all made in Z design tool, not a pic uploaded) + one png of a bee. It is not a single pic  but a combination of elements put on a product.

When Zazzle's newly designed home page was rearranged so designers no longer saw what random customers saw, I wondered why this was done. Then I decided they didn't do it for us alone, that it was done for everyone, meaning that it was done for customers. It's similar to what other retailers do on their home pages if you have an account with them.

What we're seeing is unlikely to be what customers see. They're more likely to see where they've been and what they've looked at. Then again, is this true? If my own version of the home page is representative, then utterly random designs and designers will show up.

Confused.

I think customers see something similar; things based on their browsing history. If someone searched for baby shower invites, they are likely to see more baby showers and probably shops that offer baby shower products (if this is true, I wonder how long that remains because once you buy what you needed you are no longer interested in similar products so that might look spammy).

With the customized home page, people see things based on what they've viewed, what they've searched for, what they've purchased, what they've Liked, stores they've Followed ... And that activity is reflected immediately on the home page. For the purposes of this thread, I was able to go to a poster's store, click on a few items, and then go back to the home page and presto - their store was right there that quick in Stores You May Like.

I've come to really like the customized home page. What I see is obviously skewed with results based on products/stores I viewed because they were posted in the forums for whatever reason so there's a lot of designs/themes I'm not interested in always showing, but outside of those, it has at times actually enticed me into viewing something I never would have happened on before. And from a designer perspective, the custom home page becomes very useful at bringing similar/competing type designs to you to check out. 😉

For shoppers, I think it's a good thing that probably leads to more engagement. I know me personally, I am easily led down the "similar things you might like" rabbit hole on YouTube and Amazon market and such.

Store IconStore IconWebsite IconFacebook IconPinterest IconInstagram IconNight Cafe IconDiscord IconBuy Me a CoffeeOut of Stock List

On Amazon, I always scroll through that row of "similar products" because those are products that don't appear at search results at first; so their algorithm, from what I gather, is showing a wide variety relevant to the search request and then show similar products to what you clicked. It works very well for me so if Zazzle implemented something similar for customers, I'm assuming it could be very beneficial for all.

I just created a post in Feedback requesting the ability to create and upload custom thumbnails for our stores. I hope to be heard 🙂

shellifitz
Valued Contributor

I just went to my product page and saved the tiny thumbnail image from there then zoomed in on it and even it doesn't look blurry like the one they are displaying.

 view_orig

This is what that cover image on my store should look like and I would be ecstatic if it did...  There has to be some rendering glitch affecting that image on the home pages.   Dang I don't want to have to post all this again in the tech forum...😒

It is unrecognizable honestly. Must be a super glitch that chose you to happen. Tbh, I really think my suggestion in Feedback is not kudoed enough as kudos are a factor for decision makers. I am not quite thrilled for both of my stores pics; I would make much better ones if allowed.

I think if more designers saw the image they had they would be right here kudoing you!

I see this post was started on Feb.15 but I am just now taking time to read it.   Glad I did because I now know that I am in the same boat.  Saw the image used to represent my store and it was so blurry you could not even tell what it was.  The original image is not blurry and it has sold a few times but far fewer than many many others, so why did they even pick THIS image to show and why is it appearing so blurry?

Rather upsetting to have any of my images shown in that manner.  Looks like many of us have been discovering the same thing happening.

@Shar-Ken I reported mine in the tech forum and Padriag has sent it for investigation this morning, so maybe they will figure out what the glitch is.
