In Vietnamese and Hoa traditions, fish are released into rivers, ponds and lakes shortly before the Vietnamese New Year (Tet) Celebrated on February 1. The Kitchen Gods ride on the colorful fish in search of the Jade Emperor and when they find him in heaven, they let the emperor know how the families are doing. The hope is that this will bring luck to the families, keeping them happy and healthy, and keeping their kitchen fires burning bright. What a lovely tradition!
