I just want to make sure of something before putting in requests for grouping. If I have a design that is blue text on a white background, and I change the text to red but keep everything else the same then I know I can request to group it. But, if I have blue text on a white background and I change the text to white and the background to blue, can this also be grouped with the original design or is that considered a "new design" and not just a color variation? Hope I'm making sense!

I've successfully changed both text colors and background colors on products and they've grouped together. If you use different images for text or the background I don't think they'll group, but if you use only the design tool for colors, they should group.

You have probably read the help article by Zazzle:
https://help.zazzle.com/hc/en-us/articles/360033801273-How-Design-Themes-are-Created
Basically, if you only change colors, things should group. It doesn't matter which colors you change, as long as you don't change anything else, it should auto group. I do emphasize "should" because many of us know that grouping is imperfect. Often times 4 out of 5 colorways will group, leaving one all by itself. There are other examples too, but the point is that the idea is great, but it has not reached a point where it is consistently awesome. Ideally over time, things will get better. Until then, you can try and request products be grouped, but many have reported issues with that process as well.
