Why would zRank go down?

Why would my store's zRank go down?  It was at a 9 for several months and just went down to a 7, not sure why.  Any ideas?

in my experience:

(1) number of referrals went down
(2) ratio of number of products to number of sales has changed
(3) setting a royalty rate of 15% and higher (with the possible exception of digital products)

Thank you WHS_Designs.  Unfortunately, my referrals have been none existent since January not sure why.  My sales have been normal.  Definitely not my royalty because it hasn't changed and is below 15.

Thanks for your reply!  Guess I need to work on my referrals.

@ecj0320

you're welcome! if you're lucky enough to be invited to join the Zazzle Promoter 2.0 program, do it! 🙂

economically (and politically), times are really tough. I am lucky to eke out 2-3 referrals a year (!!) myself.

My rank recently went from a 7 to a 6. I don’t know why because my sales are up. Plus, I’ve always been able to generate a decent amount referrals. The only thing I can think of is that I’ve been slammed with a lot of “optimization needed” notices. I’ve optimized all of those hidden products except ~20 products, but my Z rank is holding steady at 6. Just chiming in to share that it happened to me, too.

Could it be that the criteria have changed?

@ecj0320 your store has less than 300 products, amazing! it is my dream 🙂
are you comfortable sharing how many of those sold at least once? you have to have an extraordinary ratio between these two amounts to have a zrank of 9, I suppose 🙂 since you don't have referrals and you're bronze like me. I also don't have referrals but I have a much worse ratio for sure, mine is 16% (my zrank is 6).

Not ecj but you post got me curious. I am Bronze, zRank of 5 (6 is highest it's ever gone) and have 491 public products. I just checked by sorting by Most Sold and counting until I hit the first zero. 124 things sold out of 491, so 25%. Not great but actually more than I was expecting. A month or two ago I deleted about 30 products in one session and it had no effect on my rank. I rarely do any promoting so my linkovers are abysmal and the last time I earned a referral that wasn't from me buying my own product was all the way back in June of 2021. I have no way of knowing for sure but I think linkovers and not just actual referrals are a factor as they show you are trying & driving traffic to the site even if those visitors don't actually buy anything (and maybe they are buying, we wouldn't know unless our cookie stuck and thus showed up as a referral).

I have an old now-defunct store that I set to Private but left the handful of products in it Public (I had some twisted reasoning for that LOL). So 8 public products, all of which had sold, that's a 100% rate. But its zRank is only 3 because I never did the store completion steps, it's only at 60%. Would be interesting to see what the zRank would jump to if I completed it but with only 8 products I couldn't do that even if I wanted to.

hello @ColsCreations
I commented based on my experience and the fact that ecj had a zrank of 9

my experience:
- 2022: I don't know exactly when my zrank grew from 4 to 5 because I wasn't paying attention at the time
- Growth in my sales in 2023 (keep in mind that I started 13 months ago and made very little sales in the first months, so gaining momentum means big increases):
in February they rose 86% compared to January, in March they rose 67% compared to February - My zrank went to 6 at the beginning of April.
in April my sales were up 109% compared to March - My zrank remained at 6 at the beginning of May.

ecj must be selling well, possibly much more than me, but I associated that she should have a much better ratio because even with better sales zrank=9 is very different from zrank=6
But I could be wrong of course 🙂

Agreed. 9 is astounding. She said her sales have been normal so the drop to 7 IMO has to be attributed then mostly to the lack of referrals since Jan. It's possible she added enough new products since she was last ranked to skew her ratio which also contributed to the drop, but 7 is still excellent. Given the "data" shared by the three of us now to compare, I'd say referrals and consistent sales & growth factor much heavier than the ratio. None of us are getting referrals so things are even there. And despite my 25% ratio I have the lowest rank at 5, which I attribute to having the least consistent sales.

@ColsCreations another thing I was thinking about: it would make sense if the zrank somehow considered the quantity of products sold for the first time, because selling several products for the first time means that the designer is not only relying on the sales of his best sellers but continues creating (or promoting) new products.
In March I sold several products for the first time, more than usual (but the ratio barely changed), did that influence the rise in zrank at the beginning of April? maybe or maybe not:D

True ..my referrals also dropped and sales

@ColsCreations I forgot to comment: to see the number of items sold at least once, go to the "royalty by product" page and look at the top right of the table

Ah, I rarely look at that page so just checked it out. It shows 160 for me but I can see that includes both Hidden and Deleted products. Going to my backend to show only Hidden products, I have 21 that have sold. 160 - 21 = 139.
139 - 124 (how many public products I counted earlier today) would leave 15 products that I deleted even though they sold. I don't know if that's right. but I'm not worried about it. The zRank page says Hidden products don't factor in to it, and including Hidden & Deleted products in figuring your ratio would skew the numbers. In my case it would go from 25% to 33%. But if you're a newer store or just confident you haven't Hidden and/or deleted anything that's sold, then looking at that number is way easier then counting from the backend.

I counted mine the way you did. I sold 124 but out of  3,400 and I just got docked from a ZRank 7 to a 6. I held that 7 for a long time. That is only 27.4% I am wondering if it has to be over 25%?

It already is back up to 7!  Barely one day hitting 6 ..wow

I have a consistent 9 too. However, if my sales dip for a few weeks then it dips to an 8. Sales seem to be the only thing that affect it. Sales go back up. It's back to a 9.
