I have been playing with the scale tool (The + and - on right side of screen in Zazzle editor), and I have noticed something that doesn't seem to appear on this forum.
The scaling is not linear. By that I mean, it does not go up by the same increment each time. It scales up the more times you press the button.
As an example, say I have a text block that is 100pt size.
If I click the plus sign 5 times, this is what happens:
Size Increases To | Increment |
110 | 10 |
121 | 11 |
133.1 | 12.1 |
146.41 | 13.31 |
161.05 | 14.64 |
If I scale down, the increments are...
Size Decreases To | Increment |
90 | 10 |
81 | 9 |
72.9 | 8.1 |
65.61 | 7.29 |
59.05 | 6.56 |
(Additionally, as with other tools, holding shift makes the increments much larger, and control makes the increments much smaller.)
This exponential scaling has a negative impact for designers. If we scale up an item by 2 clicks (21 points of size), and then decide we want our original size, we can't just click the minus twice, because that only does 19 points of size, leaving our design still 2 points larger overall. I think most designers would expect a scale tool to uniformly affect its content, and this does not.
The current workaround would be to rememebr how many times youve clicked it, and Undo that many times... but if you have moved something else between that action and your current one, that's not possible. Or, for fonts, you have to remember your font size and type it in. Neither of these is ideal in my opinion.
Please consider making the tool work with consistent increments.
