Seriously ??? 4% self-referral on a digital download Invitation ????

So an invitation that I normally would receive between $8-$10.01 royalty and between $1.60-$1.80 on 15% self referral (depending on the discount on the day ) .... now gets $5.08 on royalty and $0.43 on %4 SELF REFERRAL ????

This does not make sense at all !!!! what is the point of self promotion then ?

So discouraging and disheartening! to say the least....Untitled design-19 copy.jpg

It's not letting me to edit but needed to add, these are two different invitations but with same price sold the same day ! one self referral and one third party yet I received the same royalty amount !!! 🤔 Add a heading.png

Yes, The royalty remains unchanged. If you look at my above screenshot, the royalty on a referred sale is $5.08, that doesn't change regardless of whether you or someone else is credited as the referrer.
The difference is that in the above Self referred sale, in addition to the $5.08 royalty, you also made either $1.82 or $0.43 as a referral commission. Until Zazzle gives us sales reports that include total earnings (royalties and referrals) in one view, you have to match them up your self.

So your total earnings on that sale are Royalty (5.08) + Referal (0.43) = $5.51.
$5.51 + the $0.56 transaction fee = 50% of the total paid by customer).

That 50% is the earnings cap for instant/digital downloads on a Self-Promotion link referral.
Had it been a "Cross-Over" self referral, you would have earned 56.8% instead ($6.91, $1.40 more) .
Had it been a referrer = None sale, you would have earned 88.3% ($10.73) of the total paid by customer.

The total earnings cap only applies to "Self-Promotion" link referrals.

NOT saying this is "fair", just saying that instant downloads are a unique situation where the cap on Self-Promo earnings makes you earn less than if it were a Cross-Over self referral or a rare None.

What is the difference between a Self-Promo and a Cross-Over self referral?

A "Cross-Over" stems from a link that includes your RF# and thus earns you a flat 15% of order total as a self-referral commission.
A "Self-Promo" stems from a link with no RF ID attached, and earns you a variable rate as self-referral commission on your own products. If not your product you earn zero.

Thank you for the excellent explanation!

Thank you so much for detailed calculation and explaining ! Some how it doesn't make sense to me since, clean links ( self-referral ) was supposed to be the highest rewarding and highest paying and it has been, until this new mess of changes ... 😫

I've noticed the exact same thing with my sales.  Some self referrals receive 3% and some receive 48%.  I've even had self referrals (Clean links) that only received the royalty and not the self referral. Since I started Zazzle 10 years ago, this has been the most frustrating and confusing of all their changes. (Not to mention disheartening and discouraging.) Is this the only forum where creators can voice their concerns?

That really is frustrating, it feels like no matter how hard we try, still at some point the rug is being pulled from under our feet ! I've been having some what consistent income from Zazzle since past couple of years and am really grateful for it ,yet  the discouragement can't be ignored ... I'm planing to open an Etsy store cause this is not going to work for me like this, specially with such level of inconsistency on our earnings, I can't keep all my eggs in one basket any more ....

I think that the most frustrating part of all the changes is that they are treating digital sales the same as physical with the marketing fee.  It feels like a bait and switch. Many artists were leery of putting their work up for digital sales, but the high earnings on them made the risk worth it.  Now that all our work is out there, Zazzle just decides to take away half of that and limit referral earnings... it seems almost criminal honestly. I bumped my royalty on them way up and just hope for NONE referred sales (isn't that a ridiculous way to do business)...

Exactly ! I warmed up to digital downloads the moment I noticed what a big difference is making for my store ! more than %70 of my sales ! I did raised my royalties on everything in early April because of the new changes but my Zrank 9 store dropped to 7 and then 6 within a couple of days and my sales tanked too!  so I re-adjusted my prices again and now its back up again to 8 ... this is so unfair !

Of all the things in these new terms, this is the one that deserves priority reconsideration and re-evaluation. For all the talk of opportunity and winning big when we self-refer, having it work out worse for this category is a huge problem.

Exactly ! They are talking about opportunity, but for who really?  I do sell somewhat decent amount of digital downloads that I could count on every month, compare to once in a blue moon self-referral sales! I definitely don't see any opportunity for me as a seller...😩
