I understand that the API can allow custom text, selection of an image, etc... but is there a way to use the API to allow a customer to choose the color of a product? I've got a really great idea, but to make it work the customer needs to be able to enter a hex code of their own so the product in mind will be the correct color. Is it possible to do so? If so, I could use a little guidance, if you'd be so kind.
Many thanks,
PC

If they use the design tool, customers can select their own background color. Is that what you had in mind?

I'd like to set up a website that would pertain to pretty much 1 product. There are times in life where having this item in a certain color is important. I would like the buyer to goto my website and enter the hex code and then be sent to Zazzle where the product would appear in the proper color and all the customer has to do is click add to cart.
So I do not want to have them enter the design tool. Not sure if what I want to do is possible, but this idea has been stewing in my brain for awhile and I thought I'd ask about it as I'm not sure how to accomplish the idea. There are a few other issues to be considered, but if I can't get past this hurdle, the rest don't matter......

I would have to learn how to use API or get Elizabeth to do it. She is more detail-oriented and techy.
I just thought that if I showed that there are others creating designs where customers can change the color of any element that Zazzle might be willing to invest the time in programming it.

I don't know what your idea is, but after thinking about your question it made me realize that I think customers could take our pillows or train set and use the patterns in the create tool.

I don't think the API lets you change the background color per se, but the normal way to use the API is to use images stored on your website, and then use the API to linkover those images to your template product. So it would be doable if you use pngs for the background. The harder part of that would be you'd need to find some software to create and save the images on your web server if they really need to be literally any hex codes.
I noticed the API instructions says it allows text color to be set by hex code in the link (if the item is small enough maybe you could use a really big font to cover the background?) But it would be great if Zazzle added background color as an option the same way!

@oph3liaThanks for the reply. It's been awhile since I checked this thread. Your right that I would want the customer to have the ability to use just about any hex code, although there are perhaps a hundred or so that would most often be used. You've given me some food for thought. I wonder if there are any special characters that I could use to cover the design space...
Thanks again,
PC

Here I tried to make an example (hope the link shows up OK) I used the unicode square ⬛ and heart ♥ .

@oph3lia- Interesting... Thanks for your help. I'll have to play with it a bit, but I think it might be a solution. 🙂 Now I have to consider a plethora of other issues concerning this idea.
