So...what is this beast?  Can someone explain in a few sentences - in the Zazzle context - what this is and what does it allow me to do? Explain it like I'm in kindergarten. 😝

Zazzle's API is a way for your website to talk to Zazzle's template modification 'engine' so it does what your website tells it to do. That way, the customer who is doing the clicking and choosing on your website (product, colours, sizes, text etc) can buy the end results.

It may be easier to understand once you have played around a little on that site.
