I thought Cover Photos should not include any text, so I am puzzled about this statement on the Cover Photos landing page:
"You may want to ‘merchandise’ your product by adding callouts and marketing language on your Cover Photos to grab customers’ attention and stand out from the crowd."
Should we be adding text now?
Solved! Go to Solution.

Perhaps we need Zazzle to tune in on the yea/nay of the issue.

I didn't spot that statement, but it sure sounds exactly like the way people create their own pins on Pinterest. Perfectly fine for Pinterest, but a quick imagining of a lot of people doing it here makes me easily imagine a tasteless screaming for attention that will end up turning Zazzle's pages into a garbage heap.

I didn't catch that recommendation, but I think THAT is absurd! I agree with Barbara that it would turn the Zazzle marketplace into a tasteless garbage heap! I think it will turn customers off, as well, since we get bombarded daily with millions of ads everywhere.

Most landing pages now have cover photos in the top rows but thankfully nobody is (yet?) adding text. It sounds like a bad idea and will look bad. It's all just eucalyptus leaves and bokeh backgrounds, which is fine. No words. I hope it stays that way.

The issue with cover photos is they are multipurpose.
For example, for social media sharing, it makes good sense to have those text callouts etc as the cover photo then becomes a standalone ad, perfect for pinning, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc for which the affiliate then adds sales information etc. They also look perfectly acceptable when displayed on the sellers own product page. They do not however, look so good when they become part of a collective of filtered search results. So ... the question arises, what is more important? There are merits for both ....

We have been uploading images for 2 yrs, and so some may not now align with the updated guidelines.

@CreativeLeahG
what I posted is ‘specific to the upload cover button info only’, when preparing to upload a cover photo that info shows up.

Right. So, I think this new statement is contradictory!

Contradictory is a good word choice. I found humor in it, thanks for the laugh.

This seems definitive, because it's in the actual rules right there when you upload the cover photos. The blog posts/ landing pages were probably written by somebody else that didn't get all their facts straight.

this is what I remembered as well.. I had some with ribbons across the top corner etc and removed them.. then I heard we could use a small inconspicuous logo which I do.. / so now I'm very confused. I liked the red banner ribbon I used to use before I removed them but I see now there are banners out there and being used and in some cases recommended.

Given that self-made pins are a third again in height, we can add a text area at top or bottom of a cover, upload it to Pinterest, and we're done. I don't know about the other sites because I don't partake, but I really, really hope it isn't done here on Zazzle.

I'm somewhat relieved. It sounds as if Zazzle thought better of adding text but forgot to change the original description.

There are already many products with text given that we started 2 yrs ago and there was no mention re text at the time. I would assume they added it into the rules (not the ones idraw refers to) because they've seen how well those products and covers perform with regard to sales.

I agree, we definitely need clarification on this. Also, if anyone has an example of one they have made with text, please post a link, I am super curious about what is and is not acceptable. TIA!

Could be as I predicted, when everything stands out, nothing stands out. Next they'll be calling for neon-flash effects and sirens to attract customers. Yee-haw!
