Customers can't delete an image outside the design tool?

I have placeholder text with a small white strip beneath it so the text will stand out. If a customer wants the whole thing without text, they can delete the text on the product page, but it appears the white strip can be deleted only if I send the customer into the design tool, which I have no intention of doing. Is there any way at all for a customer to delete an image on the product page? If not, does anyone know why not?

In days gone by, all you needed to do was to make it a templated object and I'm pretty sure there was a little X (or remove) to delete it (unless I'm mistaken)

Under the 'Learn More' pop out in the design tool now it says 'This turns the image into a placeholder that a customer can replace without visiting the design tool'

So now it's only replace and not remove

I believe you are correct @Sara_H I still have some VERY old products where it mentions removing the text bar.

Yup, that's how I remember it. It was there when customers could also change the background color, which seems another loss.
