This is hard to explain - but If you customize your own product it then acts like any other non-designer custom product and does not earn a royalty - I believe this is because designer accounts aren’t really any different from regular customers and royalties aren’t given for every product a person comes in and creates from a blank….In a convoluted way it makes sense…
To earn your royalty you must purchase a product that is for sale in your store without making any changes to it - so do all of your customizations and post it for sale as direct only or private then buy it as is. This will ensure you get your royalties- it does not ensure you get a referral- that’s a whole other convoluted process of making sure you don’t have any lingering cookies.
FYI - if you aren’t getting a self referral you may be better off NOT getting a royalty these days… If you buy directly from a blank you should be paying the base price for the product with no extra percentage for a royalty. With Z now taking a cut of that royalty in ‘marketing fees’ and excess royalty fees, you will actually end up paying less by skipping it… you’ll only come out ahead if you also get the self referral.

I should clarify - that's only when you are buying your own product... not in genera! A royalty is of course, still a royalty when someone else is doing the buying. But yeah.. if you buy your own product and just get a royalty you aren't just shuffling the money around and getting it back anymore.. (and getting the bonus of having your product credited with a sale). Once they take out the marketing fee and if you have your royalty set higher than the preferred max, the excess royalty fee and if you have a Z cookie the 3rd party fee, you'd be better off not getting it at all. You do end up getting a 'discount' if you can manage to get a self referral too.

@PenguinPower I understood it that way and have now checked my data on a product I had customized to buy for my self and I definitely can confirm what you said. Which means I will buy differently for my self going forward since most of our items are customizable (I even sometimes google for long US based names to use like right now for my Chinese New Year items, smile).

Even if you don't make any actual changes, just clicking to Personalize to look at the template panel that opens and then X'ing it out - that alone puts it in your Saved Designs. So if you order it, it's ordering a private not-for-sale Saved Design thus no earnings or sales stats for it. Seems weird but actually makes sense to me. As Designers we often use an existing published product as the jumping-off point for a new one and until we publish it as such the system doesn't know the difference, its just another private Saved Design until then.
It used to be that if you wanted to purchase your own published product with customizations and have it count as a sale, you could go in anonymously, personalize it, and not sign in to your account until prompted at checkout. Then the sale would go down as if it were any other random shopper customizing and ordering the product. That always worked for me.

@PenguinPower is right about how this works. But since it is showing as a payment in your Earnings History then you made earnings on it, so it must have been counted as a for-sale product. Must be just a gltich/delay in also showing in the Royalty report. If it was counted as a private not-for-sale item purchase, it wouldn't be in your Earnings History as you wouldn't have earned anything on it.

I don't understand what you mean.
My Earnings & Transaction History page is formatted like this:
If I purchased a private not-for-sale design of my own it wouldn't be here, I'd need to look on my Order History page to see what I paid for it. If something's showing on this E&T History report, then you earned a royalty on it. Unless it's showing $0 as your earned amount? Or under Description is says something other than "Royalty on Product" for you?

Oh, I understand now. That means that you need to make sure to toggle off the option that says something along the lines of, “Use Your Zazzle Earnings” in the payment area. Then you can choose debit card, credit card, or paypal options.

@MasterpieceCafe @ColsCreations Yes, I have noticed a delay too (several hours) last time I have purchased something and the emails are lagging five days behind in fact.

You can cancel the order and re-order it in a way so that you do earn a royalty.
