I have created a few products for sale, but I'm unsure if I also need to create a separate template for anyone wanting to customize the item using the original template of my product design. Example. Mug or T-shirt?

Customers can transfer the image from one of your products, which you have listed, to another product, which they wish to purchase, as long as you have used a large enough image. So no, you do not need to create any separate template.
I also do Postcrossing!

I'm not sure if I'm understanding your question correctly but I had a look at your existing products and see that you haven't added a template field on any of them to make it easy for a customer to personize with a name or whatever. Just to clarify a bit, we don't normally refer to our products themselves as templates although you are not technically wrong in calling them that, so that's why I was a bit confused by your question. That term is usually used in relation to the template fields that make it easy to customize.
If you want to add a template field to any of your designs, you would have to make a new product and add text and then make the text into a template object for customers to personalize. The products you have now can be used by a customer as is, but they would have to enter the design area to add a name. So it's up to you if you want to leave them the way they are or make new products. I would suggest you add templates as often as possible because they do sell better.
You can add your design to as many different products as you want but, since customers have the option to transfer your design, it's not really necessary to put your design on every single type of product. It's up to you.
Hope this sort of answers your question..lol.
