How Many Characters for Tags?

I thought there was a 50-character limit for tags, but I had one long-tail phrase that was 42 characters, and it got rejected! The error message is totally irrelevant: "Only one Fan Merch tag allowed," but I figured out a long time ago that that means the tag is too long. So how long can a tag be?

I'm not sure what the limit is in terms of characters, but I know there's a 5 word limit. So even if your tag is fewer characters, if there are more than 5 words it will get rejected.

Yes, I had exactly 5 words, 42 characters total.

Even though it says on the Post-For-Sale page that you have 10 tags and a total of 500 characters which would average out to 50 per tag, the max is actually only 40. 41 triggers the error. Since Zazzle search treats the whole tag list as one long string (words at end of one tag will make an exact phrase with words at beginning of next tag) I'm not sure why there even is a per tag character limit. The whole list is actually one long tag so there should just be a total character limit.

Thank you! That 10 tags with 500 characters is what made me think that there was a max of 50 per tag. I agree that there shouldn't be a per tag character limit.
