Does anyone know if it's now a requirement to switch to an email login instead of a username in order to see messages?

If you are referring to chat message, they are visible once you are logged into your Zazzle account. It sounds like you may be referring to a recent scam message that is widely being reported on Zazzle. The scammer is impersonating Zazzle Support or Zazzle Customer Service and instructing you to verify your email or some other verification. That is a scam and is not coming from Zazzle. Block the sender and report it to Zazzle. If you are referring to something else, please be more specific with your question. Hope this is helpful.

No, I don't mean those scam messages, I'm not following any email links, it's after I'm normally logged into my account - when I try to access my messages and click on the message bubble from my home page it redirects me to this page:
Although it says you "can" switch to email login, it appears you are 'required' to? Because clicking on the "Not now, I'll convert later" option just returns me to my home page. I normally login with my username, not my email address and I didn't want to change that.

I have never the message you are receiving when you click on the chat bubble. Perhaps Zazzle Customer Support could answer your question?
