Low-competition niches

A question in my mind has been bothering me a lot, and I can't find a comprehensive answer. When I was researching, studying, and learning about the print-on-demand business, I saw that the niches with high demand are difficult to compete in, especially for beginners. And that you should focus on sub-niches and look for less competition. When I find a niche with little competition, how can I know that it is desired? Maybe the small number of results is an indication of lack of interest. I am talking about someone who does not have specialized research tools like Merch Informer and cannot afford them until they make sales.

Maybe the best thing is to delve into your own interests and design a few things for that. Advantages: you know the topic, and can design well for those who are also interested in the topic. Also, if you don't do so already, you can start to follow Facebook pages or Insta feeds or Twitter,  for that interest. This way you can put yourself in a position to learn even about what people might want.
