Message when tagging designs

In tagging designs, what does the message Only one FanMerch tag can be added" mean?

One of your tags is too long. 40 characters max per text field, including spaces.

ColsCreations,  thank you!  For ages I have wondered what that phrase even meant.  I still do not get how that phrase means that my tag is too long.  I guess to me, it would make more sense to some of us to just say, "your tag is too long"or "no tags over 40 characters".  Now that, I believe all of us could plainly understand.  The "fan merch" just really had me stumped.  Anyway, this will be very helpful to now know.  Thanks again!
