Hello All!
I need Help understanding the New Collection Types. I'm a little confused about them. So any Help I could get would be Greatly Appreciated!
I think that I have to completely overhaul all of my Collections with this New Collection Type system. But I'm not sure how to do it. Which of the following should a Collection be???
An example of a Collection should be: example- 1) "Necklaces" OR should it be 2) "Bird Necklaces" OR should it be 3) "Cardinal Bird Necklaces."
And do we still have to have at least 10 items in each Collection???
Thank You for Your Help!

I'm completely confused by all of these collection changes - there's about a million new settings, but as far as I can tell nothing looks any different to the customer. Not sure if I'm missing something or if it isn't fully rolled out yet?
Anyhow, not sure if you've read this or not: Introducing Collection Types | Zazzle
I can't say that it helped me at all... I'm mostly just overwhelmed and confused, but maybe you can get some useful info from it?

My understanding was it was more for how Zazzle was going to use collections for marketing purposes. Sort of like how they do currently with displaying other items from a collection on a product page, but building more on that with email and other marketing. I could be wrong, though.

I think you are spot on. That is why they are trying to force some consistency in the collection products and order. As well as adding "eyecatching" banners and media.

Maybe eventually they will look differently. I am trying to get the products to sort into the right groupings in the Wedding - Cross-Sell/Event Suite. Then I am checking that I have enough categories represented to make the channels work. While I am sorting through this, I am trying to get my head around the media I need to create. I think this is where we can show products together - which is very exciting.

Barbara,
Channels are advertising methods that Zazzle might use for your designs - e.g. Zazzle Marketplace, Your Stores, Email. I believe you can't directly choose them, they are based on criteria Zazzle chooses.
The only place I've seen it so far is when migrating or viewing a collection. If you click the right arrow > next to Enabled, there are some settings.
Hope this helps, I know it is a little vague.

@CrazyMermaid Have you found a way to move things around in terms of the channels/groups? Like can we move something out of the bonus section into one of the channels/sections/whatever they're called? Not sure if I'm doing something wrong or if that feature doesn't exist.

If you find it exciting, I'll gladly pay you to do mine! I'm so burned out with doing cover photos for products, I can't even THINK about all the work needed for the collection covers!

I'm also confused, and judging by the number of similar threads that have popped up, everyone is equally baffled. Hopefully these can be consolidated into one thread for ease of discussion.
I'd planned to do some work on my collections this weekend, but I honestly can't make heads or tails of these new changes, so I think I'll wait until we have some clarification.

@Beautiful I can't answer any but one of your questions and it's only with the number of products in a collection. At first, it was 7 products, then it was reduced to 6 products, and then it seemed there was no specific number at all. So, don't worry about it for now. We all have to wait for Zazzle to give us details far beyond what they've given us so far. Gosh, they didn't even give us a description of their vision. Only that it would be wonderful.

I have sorted through that some collections like the Wedding Cross-sell Event suite requires 4 products, but that those four products have to be in different categories. For example a collection of 4 wedding invitations won't show up under each other in this category. I have to have an invitation, a napkin, gift tag or sign. There are gobs of other categories that work as well. I think the different collection types might require different things. For now I am focusing on this category, so I can learn the new rules a little at a time. (I also have collections that don't fit neatly into categories.)

Yes, but even when following this rule, i.e. having specific "Recommended" products in a collection, including the "Required" product, it doesn't seem to be working at all. I have a birthday party collection with various items where I can't even move the invitation as the first "Required" product! The explanation on how to move this product from the "Bonus" section to the "Recommended" section isn't even clear at all. I have another divorce party collection where all the products I created, which are the ones you'd expect to have such as invitation, paper plate, napkin, cup etc... end up in the "Bonus" section without the possibility to move them to the "Recommended" section because, again, the explanation on how to do this doesn't even work or makes sense. And this worries me because in the explanation given by Zazzle about this new collection system, they "recommend" to have most of our products within our collections as "Recommended" so they have better chances to be shown on the channels... So, if we can't move our products to the "Recommended/Required" products, how are we supposed to manage our collections to ensure they can be seen on the three channels to have a chance to be purchased??? I sent several comments to Zazzle Admin. using the form they sent us to comment on collections, and also sent screenshots. It's a real complicated mess...

In theory, the thing that determines which section the products get slated into is the marketplace department (the one that you can change under "edit details".) You can find out which department it wants by clicking on the space for that section. It'll open a screen and you'll see something like this:
So editing the department seems to be working for most things that are not going into their proper slots, but just today I found one where I have a return address label that's designed on a regular sticker (because it needed to be square shaped) and that one is in theory in the correct department, but it still shows up under the bonus section.
I dunno. It doesn't seem like any of these changes are live yet as far as the customer is concerned, so maybe they'll get it all sorted out before that happens? I think the goal here was to make it easier for us so that products within the collections could be ordered automatically without us having to drag them around individually - and I appreciate that effort - but it just seems like they threw so many other things into the mix that it's all a big complicated mess now. I'm still not sure which parts aren't working right, and which parts I just don't understand. Sigh.

Exactly. I have several collections with a similar or same design on several different products, as the customer can't just migrate it to another product without lots of adjustments. So showcasing a design on an array of different products. The theme being that particular design. Doesn't seem to fit into any category or "type". Do I need to delete these collections?
I see yet another huge pile of work coming my way and I haven't even recovered yet from the loss of Blooming Elegant font, which requires re-doing all these products. Not to mention all cover images.
Where's my staff ... ?

Exactly... I have a lot of collections that are based on a single design made for multiple products because few things migrate seamlessly... There appears to be little place for these types of collections in the new system....

@Anne I also have many collections like this for the same reason. I am placing them in the "similar design/theme" category. I know that it says "same design/similar products" but at this point there is nowhere else to put them that won't be ignored in the promotional aspect. I guess I will have to wait and see how that works out for me.

Same here; lot'sof collections based on one design / theme on different products. First started out putting them under other; i reconsidered and now mostly put them under Home & living and choose 'gift theme' next. Only because i don't know what else to choose...

Sigh.... Come on Zazzle, show your bias to weddings and baby showers a little more. There NO proper category for most of my collections. They are mostly design based. They aren't appropriate for any of the categories that are looking for a specific event, but they certainly aren't "Other" either - in fact the wording is downright insulting "Use this type for collections with no clear purpose or intent." and btw we won't be showing them to people either....

I agree. If you’re not in the wedding, bridal shower, birthday, graduation, stationary business you’re a second-rate player in this new collection category setting. And I am particularly annoyed with “you can use the Other category, but your collection will not be featured.”
It seems to me that Zazzle needs to include enough categories that every designer’s products will receive equal billing.
Don’t be so quick to roll out a new feature until you’re certain it mostly works (I understand a few hiccups), and that you’ve covered all bases where the feature works with your designer’s existing products and product suites.

Very insulting, indeed! I am not happy having to put most of my products under "Other" because that is NOT what they are! I design with mostly home décor in mind, so where do I put them? I came to the forums hoping to find that there's a category suitable for most everything that I missed somehow. Zazzle really missed the boat on this one. This feels like quite a slap in the face.

I've found you have to be in the front end of your store - collections - find the collection you want to share - click through to it and the share button is there.
No option to share the whole collection from the new Collection Management area that I've come across

One thing I just noticed, is that some of my collection tags are messed up. For example, I had a tag "Mother's Day", but it now has two tags, "Mother's" and "Day."

There's a huge swath of totally valid collections that I think are being missed... the current designations are all based on a specific recipient, a holiday/event or a particular single product... It completely leaves out collections for things like home canning/farm stand - which might include various types of products - labels and gift tags, signs. It leaves collections of home goods out in the cold too... A collection of nursery furniture items based on a theme would have no home except "Other" in the current scheme. Business and event collections that don't necessarily need invitations appear to be left out too... Like collections for Pride Month - an event or business may want give aways, favors, shirts, buttons - but not invites...
Collection types I believe desperately need to be added:
Cross-Sell - Business Suite
Gift Theme - Not Recipient/Event Based..... not every design that makes a great gift has to be for someone or someday in particular... some things are great for anyone and any occasion... This is like the thus far unrecognized plea for a unisex category in clothing... not everything has to be for a particular person...
Cross Sell - sports suite - for things like baseball cards, sports themed gifts not aimed at a particular person, patches, awards etc.
Cross Sell - hobby suite - for things like knitting tags, home canning, recipes, kitchen gifts not aimed at any particular person
Cross Sell - home decor suite - for collections of matching/complimentary home goods
I'm sure there's probably a lot more... but these are things I could think off right off the top.

With all the missing categories, I'm hoping Zazzle will make repairs. With that in mind, I won't going near my collections for a while. I don't want to be stuck trying to redo what I've already redone.
Also, I mentioned the collection changes to a designer I knew wouldn't be aware of it yet, and she took a look at her collections. Hers are the same as they've always been with no sign of the folderol we're all seeing. Is it possible this hasn't been rolled out to everyone as of yet?

Agree with the above plus a few others missing that quickly come to mind: reunions, electronics, anything pet related, car accessories, luggage, etc. - the Home and Living type is too vague at this point.

Agree, especially on "Gift Theme - Not Recipient/Event Based..... not every design that makes a great gift has to be for someone or someday in particular... some things are great for anyone and any occasion... This is like the thus far unrecognized plea for a unisex category in clothing... not everything has to be for a particular person..."
So many of my items are gift items or home decor (that could be a gift item) for no particular person or event. This is very much needed.

You CAN choose Cross-sell for the Business/ Corporate category. Not sure if it works for Home & Living, as I haven't tried that yet. I haven't even attempted anything sports-related, either.

I agree as well, but I don´t even understand why do they need to make such separate topics/themes for collection types? Like why it cannot just be functional types such as "Cross-sell" for ALL possible products, meaning that any collection of products that are complementary to each other and are usually purchased together could be classified as "cross-sell" with corresponding marketing functions... Why would they make it so unnecessary complicated and purposely "exclusive"?

Copy/pasting from one of the many other threads, since this one seems to be gaining the most traction:
I have mostly collections which are themed around holidays/parties. Think matching paper plates, cups, tablecloths, confetti, favor bags, etc.
I've selected "cross-sell/event suite" as the type of collection.
When I do this, it gives me a list of "recommended products" that don't match up with what I have in the collection, or even make sense for an event collection (why would I put a mug or a throw pillow or a magnet in a collection of table settings and party decorations?) 90% of my actual collection is relegated to the "bonus products" section, with a message that this isn't the "preferred collection" for these products.
I can select "other" for the collection type instead, but then I get a message that this type is not recommended and is not eligible for onsite experiences.
