Please Add "In Store" Search Failures You Have Discovered

Hi Everyone,

In an effort to help Zazzle improve the "In Store" search function, I invite you to add searches that you have searched in your store that have resulted in unexpected search results.

A few things I have found:

A search for "lamps" only shows lamps in the home decore tree and not items in the Baby/Kids tree.

A search for "baseball" or "basketball" resulted in 0 products found even though I have several designs with baseball or basketball themes where the word "baseball" or "basketball" is used in the title, tags and descriptions.  Instead of searching title, tags and descriptions for those words, the search algo looks in the sports tree and finds zero baseballs or basketballs there.

Please Kudo this post if you would like to see the "In Store" search function improved.

Please refrain from posting about Market Place searches.  This post is for "In Store" searches only.

Thanks,

PC

Here are a few that I've noted don't work as expected:

-'address labels'...returns some but not all and just 'labels' returns zero results
-Hershey's, Hershey's miniatures or Hershey's kisses.....zero results but 'chocolate' returns all three
-balloons...zero results
-matches..........zero results but 'lighters' returns both Zippos and matches
-corkscrews......zero results
-foam boards.....zero results
-hand fans....returns some but not all

It's important to note whether you are searching from the field on the store's Home tab or on the store's Products tab .  Results are different depending on which one you use. For instance -

Using your Pacifier City Cards store as  an example

If I use the search field on the store's Home to search for [basketball] I get this:

PC-01.jpg

It doesn't show me any search results, there's nothing noticeably different here from the Home page except if you notice the "fine print" that says "View All Results for 'basketball' in Collections".  If I click that hot link I get this:

PC-02.jpg

It's clearly searching not product tags & titles here, but only Collection tags/title.

On the other hand, if I use the search field from the Products tabs, it searches product type category, not tags/titles of all products

PC-03.jpg

I haven't figured out how to test this theory in any meaningful way, but it seems that if you have chosen to show Collections on your store home, then the store Home search field searches only Collection tags/titles. But trying to get around that by using the search field on the Products tab instead, it treats it as though you are searching for that product type rather than that keyword.

For my store, I don't have Collections showing on my store Home. But I do have one published lamp (product type) and I also have one unrelated design i named "lava lamp" and thus "lamp" is in the tags/title for numerous products, plus "lava lamp" is the actual name of a Collection. But that design/Collection name is not associated with any actual lamps. Searching for [lamp] from my store's Home or Product tab gives one result - the one actual lamp I have published. So I think that since I do not have Collections showing on my Home page, if searching from the Home page it's skipping searching for Collections with [lamp] as a keyword and going right to looking for product type = lamp, just as it does when searching from the Products tab instead.

Interestingly, if I search either the Home or Products tab for ["lava lamp"]  (with quotes),  'lamp' is no longer singled out as a product type and instead I get all the products I have used "lava lamp" as a exact phrase keyword for - so no actual lamps. But If I search either tab for [lava lamp] (no quotes) I get no results. Which doesn't jibe with the next example (*); it should be honing in on 'lamp' as a product type and therefore showing me my one actual lamp.

So going back to your basketball example at Pacifier City Cards:

If I search from your store's Home for [boys basketball], with or without quotes around it, I get zero results because it is searching Collections that include both those keywords.

If I search for ["boys basketball"]  (with the quotes) from your Products tab, I get three results where "boys basketball" occurs as an exact phrase in the title. If I search for just ["basketball"] (with the quotes) I get six results where "basketball" occurs as a keyword in the title.
(*); If I don't surround either with quotes, I get no results because once again, it's honing in on 'basketball' as a product type and thus no matches.

To summarize my rudimentary testing:

 - if you have Collections showing on your Home page, a search from the Home page field searches keywords used for Collections, not products. To search individual products instead, you need to use the Products tab field.

- if you search from the Products tab field (or the Home page field if you have no Collections showing) and one of the keywords entered happens to also be a product type, it defaults to looking for that product type instead of that keyword unless you surround the keyword(s) with quotes - then it treats it/them as keywords and not a product type.

I don't know. Tags/keywords that also happen to be a designated product type pose a problem. One customer could be searching for "basketball" because they want a bunch of actual basketballs which they could then browse for whatever design appeals to them, while another customer might be looking for basketball themed designs and not an actual basketball. I don't know how any search algorithm could deal with this, other then yield ALL results where 'basketball'  (or whatever) is either a product type or keyword, and then offer a quick & obvious way to narrow it down to specifically that product type, for the customers who want an actual basketball and not just a basketball theme. But I do know that using quotes to make it search as keyword(s) rather than specific product type is not something most people are going to know or guess.

Also, for the Collections situation - the search field on the Home page should say "search Collections" instead of "search this store" because it's not actually searching the store for matching products, it's just searching for matching Collections.

@ColsCreations

Hi Cols,  Thanks for taking a deeper dive than I in exploring the subject of "In Store" search.  I've only been using the product page search when things fail for me.   And I think it is important to note that we designers probably use search differently than a customer would.  I was pondering how often I enter a one word search term at the various sites I visit... and it is rare.  I would normally search something like - boys basketball cards, or basketball gifts for kids - not just a one word search.  It is interesting to consider the difference between how I search my store vs how a customer would actually search my store...  If I type in - basketball cards - in my product page search, the search does return all my basketball cards.  So that works well and makes sense for how most customers would probably search... But if I search from the home page, I do get the hyper link that actually leads to the collections page which shows a collection for basketball birthday cards.  But I did notice that in the Products section of the home search, it shows the cards (product) themselves.  That is great.  It does lead me to wonder why the collections portion does not do the same.  At first I thought the search actually failed because the only thing that changed on the page, before I scrolled down it, was the hyperlink for the collections search.  I would think that the best result would have been for only the basketball cards collection graphic be shown.  Then with that search the customer would see the collection and below it in the products listings, the individual cards.

Your post definitely has me thinking... Thanks!

football designs also do not come up in seach

I am also having trouble with only a portion of designs showing up in search. I have posted for several months that searching for baby tshirts (easter, pumpkin etc) in my store only shows a few designs. It seems search is tending towards showing gender neutral designs as opposed to any pink/blue themes

I also only have a small selection of foil invitations that show up when searched

For me, it doesn't matter whether your search from the 'home' or products' section of the store, all results are still not showing. I have noted this issue since last winter. Zazzle has not responded

Basically any keyword that coincides with a product type like "Football" or "basketball" always calls up the product over tags. This also causes problems if I search "art deco" which calls up decor category.

Yep. It brings up the Art & Wall Decor category. But if you put it in quotes ["art deco"] it's just treated as normal keyword search and bring up products with that phrase in them.

THANK YOU, many times over for sharing that tidbit. I can now search words like confetti and balloon to find my products.

I didn't know it until the other night when poking around in response to Pacifier City's post. And it doesn't even have to be a phrase. You can put just the single word in quotes to keep it from defaulting to product type search. So [lamp]  returns only the one actual lamp I have whereas ["lamp"] brings up that one actual lamp plus the 16 other unrelated-to-lamps products where lamp  occurs in the tags or title (as part of 'lava lamp'). I doubt this is something that would occur to a customer to do, but for designers searching their own store, it's helpful.

I was thinking the same about a customer not thinking to use the quotes BUT it's definitely helpful for those of us trying to find our items with product names in the tags, title or description.

for me the search always seems partially broken, sometimes quotes work and sometimes they don't, or it will reload the previous search terms when i hit enter. or entering same search twice different results (maybe too many products to search).  just very buggy. One thing I cannot find outside of my own tags are the "contour stickers" and also can't get them to come up when transferring designs. Does anyone have a tip for that? thanks

@BN_Stationery  Using "Custom cut stickers" seems to return the best results. "Cut stickers" (in quotes) seems to give a pretty good result.

thanks, it didnt work, maybe because you tagged yours with that?

BKMuir

I was searching the MAIN Zazzle stores, not my own. Also, I believe that the tags are definitely what is causing the differences. On my own shops, I always put the product type at the front: 1. so I can find them in the store, and 2. So I can call them something similar/different than Zazzle's choice. Example: the paper placemats, which Z now calls "Tear Away Paper Pads".

========Hello Neighbors @BN_Stationery @Marcia  -- If you are in San Pedro, then maybe you know Crafted at the Port of LA? I am there every Friday noon to 6. Drop by.

So neat, I grew up in RHE and my dad still lives there

Wow, that's a tough one.
I have 9  Custom-Cut Vinyl Stickers in my store.  I tried (repeatedly) every term/phrase I could think of from the Products tab search and nothing would return all nine of that product type and nothing else. Sometimes other types of stickers would be included, sometimes only seven or eight of the nine would come up, always the same one or two missing.

Searching from my Home tab instead (where I do not have Collections showing), just the one word 'contour' (with or without quotes) returns all nine and nothing else. Great! Except when I click the "View All Results for 'contour' in Products" and it switches to the Products tab with the back-end view, it only shows me eight. It's the same one sticker always missing and I don't think it's an indexing thing since it's one that has sold before. And the really weird thing is, if I switch to public view, it shows me all nine, switch back to store management view (without redoing the search or reloading the page or anything) and it's back to the one sticker missing. Switch back to public view, all nine are there again. So weird. I am glad I rarely search my own store for anything.

matchboxes

contour stickers

hand fan

I know there's more, but these are the ones I remember off-hand.

I'd have too many to list. Using the back-end store search that's placed above the product and store category links on the left side of the screen, I rarely get what I'm looking for via search. Or only get a tiny portion of what I know is there and available by any combination of title, keyword, or product type.

PacifierCity

I have recently found that if I do a search for one thing, then a little while later search for something else, when the page loads for the second search, the first search term appears in the search box... very odd...

Magnets / Magnetic things.

If you type just "magnet" it automatically sorts to the product tree for MAGNET.

However that excludes things like magnet business cards, magnet bottle openers, etc.

If you type "magnetic" you get different items.
