Another thread said photos with a cover markup will be highlighted over those without. Is there a step by step guide of how to quickly and easily do this when you don't own the thousands of products in your stores? I would like to concentrate on making new designs but this feels like another busywork assignment to keep me from that. How do I do this please?

There is no quick and easy way to create cover photos. Plenty of shops have posted about the frustration and time-consuming "busywork assignment" as you called it. Others have called it "zazzle's free art department".
Here is a link to cover photo tips and tricks--

Keep in mind that you do not have to create cover photos.
You can test out making several or a few to see whether it will be worth your time.
You can definitely decide to choose to concentrate on making new designs.

I posted this in another thread, but it confirms what you said in your first sentence,
Here’s what zazzle says about products using cover art,From this post—-

…Our site experience will now begin to favor products with Cover Photo, which includes features in our landing pages, access to special programs, as well as ranking in search. We believe the Cover Photo update will be a welcome change for customers searching for inspiration on Zazzle while at the same time, rewards Creators who put effort into their listings on the marketplace

There are no shortcuts to this.... I have made it a rule to make a cover photo for new products and after seeing my daily sales, immediately add the photo to those sold products because I have verified that a recent sale + cover photo = A new one sale. Even the product has been marked as an editor's pick after this equation (I don't know the criteria of the editor's picks that have been followed, but it has happened) So I create covers and new products daily. Obviously I create fewer new products, but I also wonder if dealing with more quality of already made designs is better than creating more and more and more.... quality vs quantity.... 🙄
