Note I am referring to the 'details' portion of the product page where all the template fields appear in a single list. And NOT the editing page the customer sees after 'customize further' etc.

I myself currently add the word 'REVERSE ....' when adding a template field to the back of something before saying the purpose of that text field. It is not always obvious to the customer which side of the template they are editing from their view unless they enter the customization tools.

It would be great if the system automatically had a fail-safe where the template field always indicated which SIDE of a document, card, invitation they were entering text for.

This won't work, because you can use a template field on multiple sides/pages. Let's take a calendar as an example: you may have a logo that is shown on each page's bottom. For that, you have 1 image template field called "Your Logo" which is duplicated on all calendar pages but shown only once in the form. Or a pillow with a flipped backside-photo: you have 1 template image "Your Photo" that is used both on the front and flipped on the back.

The template field labeling is extremely powerful and flexible, not only can you lead the customer, you can even add useful hints. Use that one. Any auto-filling will only result in a mess, and there is truly no need for this.

I always add the side or page indication to my field labels where needed, e.g. "Front - Caption", "Inside Left - Quote", "Inside Right - Your Message", "Back - Your Logo" on folded cards.
