Free Template I Made for Giving Your Zazzle Mugs a Transparent Background for Use in Cover Images

Only takes a few clicks, no skills required. Once you've got your image with the trans back though, it's on you to create your Cover with it. 😉 So this isn't a mock-up template - it's a template that allows you to very easily 'transparentize" the background of the mug mockup you downloaded from Zazzle, which you can then use to create your own unique mockup.

This template was designed to work for the Left and Right views of a 11oz Combo mug, but it also works with a Classic mug. I made it on Photoshop CC 2019, if you're using other versions the instructions may be different but you can probably figure it out.

I put instructions and the link to download the .psd file from my website on my blog here. It's totally free to download and use for your Zazzle Cover Images, no attribution or anything required, all I ask is that if you find it helpful, please promote something from my shop(s). Also, if you want to leave comments on my blog itself instead of just here, that would be appreciated, too.

If ya'll find this helpful, I'm open to suggestions on what other popular product view it would be most helpful to have such a template for.

Excellent! At some point I will have to get off this sofa and go to my "real" computer and try this!

I also do Postcrossing!

@ColsCreations
Tested it, it works, using Photoshop.

Thanks for the reminder! Now that we can do downloads of mockups they will be consistent enough that I can do this, much easier to make the selection once..

I'll post some as I do them for myself too - here's a selection for the beer/American pint glasses. This is a .psd file and compatible with photoshop. I use creative cloud, but I think this should be backwards compatible, If it isn't let me know and I'll see if I can resave it to be used with previous PS versions. To use it, open the file mask file and open your (unchanged if you move or resize anything this won't work right) downloaded Z mockup at the same time, go to the "Select" menu - pull down to "load selection", and you'll have an automatic selection on your Z mockup that you can now copy and paste onto your own background

I've also done the can cooler isolated front view. I've posted these to Google drive... I think I've set the sharing up so that they can be downloaded by anyone.... if they are not let me know.

Thank you very much! I'm using Photoshop CS5 and it works fine. AND I learned something new- I didn't know it was possible to load a selection from a different document!

Thanks very much, @ColsCreations!

I tried using your template in Photoshop Elements 2023, but unfortunately, I can't use it as is, as the Replace Contents command doesn't exist there (but! I suppose I can excise the black portions and put them on different layers. That would probably require me to modify them from being Smart Objects to not though, sadly).

Great idea though (and I should really spend more time getting acquainted with Smart Objects)!

Without Elements myself, I can only guess what might or might not work but I found this Googling

ProtipElements.jpg

and huh, that's exactly how it happened in my Photoshop CC 2019 with some mock-up templates I downloaded a while back and was following instructions on how to edit them. The layer where you were to add your own content opened as its own image in its own tab within PS. I was super confused by that, didn't understand where it was saving to or as what but I'd go back to the other tab with the main image and sure enough, it would reflect the changes I had made to the layer image in the other tab.

I just tried to make that happen with my template I posted, and while double-clicking the layer didn't do anything, right-clicking and choosing "Edit Contents" instead of "Replace Contents" did indeed make the Zazzle Product Mockup Image open in it's own tab. I then dragged a different Zazzle mug product mockup from my computer into that tab and it added it as Layer 2. I deleted Layer 1 (my black place-holder mug mockup), hit Save, and then went back to the main tab. And yup, it did reflect the change. It's not as easy/convenient as just being able to do "replace contents" but it works. So if the above "Pro Tip" is correct, you should be able to double-click in Elements to get that other tab open (or maybe there's a menu option for Edit Contents) and get it to work?

Thanks for your feedback from a different program!

you're welcome and I shall have to give your suggestions a try a little later! Many thanks again!!

That's funny, because I have full Photoshop, and I've always double-clicked the Smart Object to open it in a new window and replace the contents. It just feels more intuitive to me than right-clicking and choosing Replace Contents.

Thank you so much for this! It is a huge timesaver, much easier than going hunting for mockups with smart objects to buy that usually turn out to not work very well. Now I just have to hunt for backgrounds with tables or shelves, LOL!

Thank you for sharing this! I am having a little trouble fitting my mug image correctly onto your template. I'm pretty sure this is an issue on my end though, and will attempt again later. I love your blind pet merchandise, and have pinned a couple of them.

I made an 8x10 Plastic Pedestal Sign template, but I'm not sure if I will be able to upload it here. If this works, please feel free to use it:

Double click on the smart object, then paste your image onto the screen that opens and save. Your image should then populate on the pedestal.
