I created a new product and embedded some code on my website to display it. However, the picture is a little small and doesn't look that exciting. Can I legally copy a bigger picture from Zazzle's website and modify it, giving it a darker background, for example?

Creating your own cover photos is not only allowable, it's encouraged. Here's the guidelines.

There's a menu at the top of each product page (click on your product - this isn't in the store's backend) that will allow you to download the product mockups so that you may modify them. you'll find the link to dowload under "more options" dropdown
