Looking to create multiple options of uploaded objects on one item. For instance one mug with various dogs the customer can chose from or do I have to create a cup for each dog breed? I figured out how to allow the customer to do by clicking on the further editing tab and turning on and off various layers but I was looking for something that could be selected from the initial menu like a sort of drop down. Hope that makes sense.

The only way currently would be to let them know they can go into the design tool and do it- besides creating a mug for each breed which isn't a bad thing because then you can tag each mug with the breed specific to it and hopefully draw in customers searching by breed. You could make a media image(s) with instructions to go into the design tool if you really just want to try it with the one listing.

Thanks Melissa! I went through the design tools pretty good and I couldn't figure it out so I figured layers was the only way but great point about the tag lines didn't think if it that way.

I'd do them separately purely for the sake of marketing each breed individually.

On that idea if you had it in one drop down as i was looking at doing you could just put the breeds in the tags and it should show up on a search. Doing it this way I'm wondering if I should put them in a collection so a customer isn't seeing 10 on one design in my store. Might look more organized.

I would absolutely do them separately and put them in a collection. The thing is, when people are searching for an item, they're searching for what they want. If you're looking for golden retriever stuff, you're gonna be much more receptive to something that says "golden retriever" in the title, than something that says "dog breeds" or whatever generic term you choose - even if it does show up in the search.
Same issue with the picture. If they see an item with a picture of a great dane on the front they're unlikely to click on it, so they'll never know that they can replace the image with a golden retriever.
And it's not just the Zazzle marketplace that you need to be thinking about. People find our products through Google searches as well, so if you just create one product and put all of the breed names in the tags, it's going to really water things down in terms of SEO.
It seems a bit messy and counterintuitive from the designer's perspective, but I think it's much simpler and more straightforward for the customer to do them separately. I once read that for every step you make the customer take, you lose 50% of them. So even if you could craft the perfect title to make people understand that clicking on your product will open another screen where they can choose the dog they want, you're still going to lose 50% of your audience just by making them take that extra step.
YMMV but that's my 2 cents!
