If you are already logged in to Z and use a referral link to go to a product and then customize or personalize it, this will happen. It is because you are logged in. In this case Z believes you are in the process of creating a new product... but if you don't list it as a product to purchase by creating a new product in your store, then it is not seen by Z as a product created by you. So the sale is seen as a product that is not yours, but you came in on a link with you referral ID attached so you get the referral. I hope that makes sense and also get that the practice probably doesn't really make sense.... but I've had this happen too and it is ...irritating...
Always make sure that you come to shop while logged out and from a clean browser using a referral link that you have either bookmarked or from another website/social/etc. Only log in when prompted during the sales process.
There may be another way for this to happen, but I haven't experienced it yet...
