Tag vs. hashtag on Pinterest?

For the first time in a long time, I uploaded a pin to Pinterest (not using Zazzle's pinning button), and when filling in the various things (title, description, URL, etc.) I found a box in which to place "tags." There was no explanation nor any instructions such as using quotes or commas to separate the tags, and definitely nothing about using the hash mark. Are they actually talking about hashtags, or is their "tag" a different animal? One thing I can say is that I was able to enter only one tag, but that could be because of no instructions on how to enter the things. I searched on the internet and could find pretty much no info. Anyone here know what it's about?

@Barbara I for the longest time just copied and pasted my key words into Pinterest in that field you have mentioned until I accidentally figured out that Pinterest will have ignored them all together because they have only a very limited amount of “topic keywords” they accept. Now I just type in the beginning of a keyword and then some pop up I can choose from. Wished I had figured that out earlier. And those “topics” are really limited. As an exception there is no topic for “election” - “politics” was the closest I could find for my election campaign items but there are more for clothing, cats etc. - you will just have to see what pops up provided by Pinterest. At least I think that’s how it works but than again I could be wrong here to - I’m not claiming to be a Pinterest expert, lol.

I'm freshly back from Pinterest's help articles. Admission: I had no idea what they were talking about nor any idea how it might benefit me if I did happen to know what they were talking about. I did, however, spot the same thing as you've mentioned: a little popup for a word I'd entered but none for the other words I tried.

@Barbara Keep trying (meaning think of more ways to say something). I recently posted all my Kamala items on Pinterest (50) and sometimes I could only find one suitable keyword but often more. The limited by Pinterest is ten. It highly depends on the item/product you wanted to pin. Also sometimes the Pinterest “topic tags” go to much into detail so it’s almost a match but not quite. I found it quite annoying and time consuming to come up with tags for each product, sigh. But after a while you will remember the words which work and it goes a bit quicker.

Am I remembering correctly that they should all be separated by quotes, or is it, like Zazzle, where only phrases are enclosed?

@Barbara Neither I believe. Start writing one - let’s say “print” and then choose the ones appropriate (you can only choose one at a time) so write “print” again if there are multiples possible for your item. I used to add them all separated by comma but I think now I did that all wrong in the beginning.

The tags thing is in the new Pinterest pin creation tool, and you're right that it's weird. It's basically just adding additional keywords to the pin. If you can't find any that are relevant, just make sure that you add them in your description and you'll be covered. I leave the tags empty most of the time, they're not critical.

When reading about tags in Pinterest help, I got the distinct impression that it was more for advertising other products and other people, which I found both confusing and interesting. Would we be sending people away from us, or was it more that, with the "right" tags, we'd be drawing others toward us.
I wish companies would speak the underlying truths. When they don't, I feel they're misleading us or outright lying to us. (Kind of like politicians.)

Tags are just there to help Pinterest categorize your pins better, it will help Pinterest show your pins to more people who are interested in those topics. If you don't want to show other products on your pins you can turn the option to show other products off, there's a little toggle button at the bottom of the pin creation tool. If the link is going directly to a Zazzle link, though, I think it turns that option off automatically since it's a product pin.

The last product pin I created had a link to the product on Zazzle. I didn't notice if the option to show other products was there, but is this related to the use of tags in some way?

No, they're two separate things.
