Hi! I've just recently returned to revisit Zazzle again and start up a store. Shocked and happy that I've sold two items a while back, but my question is about shirt category. Most of the shirts I've already uploaded can be worn by both sexes.
But, I've noticed when I'm adding the shirt I'm only able to one category, so my question is have to make separate products for each (male or female?)
Solved! Go to Solution.

Congrats on the sales, that must have been a pleasant surprise to come back and find.
You don't have to publish shirts in both categories. If someone is searching by keywords they will find your shirt regardless and be able to select which style they want from the product page. On the other hand, if they are just browsing and make their way to the Womens Tshirts department, yours won't show up if categorized as Mens. It's a shame we don't have a Unisex category but publishing duplicate products to get around having to make that choice is frowned upon.
If you've been away for a while, you need to read this page:
Marketplace Optimization
I can only see 12 products in your store so suspect you may have had things hidden for Optimization.
To check if you need to optimize anything and make them public again, check the Product Visibility --> Optimization Needed option in your back-end.

That's correct, presently I only have 12 products (one of them I will be updating soon.) I'll also check out the Optimization to see if there's anything I need to fix, and yes, it would be a BIG plus if they updated the categorization selections. Thanks so much for the help!

@blckpython , Thank you SO MUCH for asking this question! I just published some eclipse shirts, and I ended up publishing a bunch of the identical design on various shirts because of the way they are categorized. I know I saw that the long sleeve shirt says specifically that it's unisex, yet they are listed as separate. I wish they would use the photo that has both the male and female like they do for the men's basic T-shirt.
My shop is somewhat new (I only started advertising it existed in November...despite uploading some things last spring), so most of my customers are coming directly to my shop. Their age also tends to be...older. lol I'm not sure they all realize that they have many shirt options in the same listing. 😞
On a semi-related note, do either of you know where we can locate which men's/women's listings are actually the IDENTICAL product? The long sleeve shirt specifically says unisex. The sweatshirt does not, so I'm wondering if the cut on those is different.
I do really wish there were an easier way to deal with apparel. I may need to do some searching to see what others have posted in the forum. If I find anything illuminating, I'll come back and share.
@ColsCreations , what do you mean that it's frowned upon to list more than one? I'm a bit concerned about that because of how I just listed my shirts. 😞 The rest of your explanation above is quite helpful in understanding how things come up with search. Thank you!

Well, as long as I've been on Zazzle it's been said that duplicate products are frowned upon, or posting same product in different stores, which would be a duplicate. Does Zazzle actually do anything about it such as remove duplicates or punish you in some way like lowering Zrank or search placement? I don't know the answer to that. But my feelings are...
* It seems unanimous opinion that the ratio of # of sales to # of products is a factor in a store's zRank. So publishing say 10 shirts where you could only be publishing 1 is hurting yourself there.
* The more products you have in your store the harder it is to keep up with staying organized and keeping them optimized so they don't get Hidden from lack of views. Again, having 10 products where you could have just one instead makes things harder down the road.
* There is a limit on how many products you can have per account. It's high, 100,000. I can't imagine having anywhere near that many products but people do. Every unnecessary duplicate is chipping away at your limit.
* As a shopper, seeing the same design on multiple shirts in search results or browsing a store/collection directly would confuse me. Since you can choose any category & style you want from the product page (assuming the designer left it open) I'd be wondering, is there something slightly different between these designs I am missing? I personally have a hard time with decision paralysis and thus paradox of choice. I'd be comparing back & forth to see if the designs were actually just the same or not and to see if the price was the same if I change the style myself compared to clicking the product listed in that style ...
* As a Creator, it honestly just peeves me. When I see say the same pillow listed as 16x16, 20x20 and outdoor on the first page of results, that pushes other different designs back farther.
This is all just my opinion and I know many don't agree with it, but I feel like on a platform like this where the end-customer can edit/customize to their needs and can also choose which product option they want from the product page, unless it's necessary to make the design work publishing multiples to cover variants a customer can choose on their own just feels spammy to me.

Here's an example of this that just cropped up today:

Thank you for your explanation. That definitely makes sense. The example you posted is completely valid. And I am currently buried under a similar circumstance, so it make sense. For my first design of my current project, I did make a bunch (eg. regular t-shirt, plus size, toddler, etc.) For the second one, after your comments, I decided to do a lower number and to try mostly funneling people to one design to see if they can "figure it out" lol. 😄
I will definitely consider your advice moving forward. Thank you again!

Then that settles it with me. I'll just upload as before. I can only hope Zazzle would include an option where I can have better organization with product categories. Here's to creating! 😉
