Using SVG files for template objects

I'm trying to provide my customers with an image they can personalise by changing the colours of certain design elements.

If you use an SVG file you can change the colour (fill) of objects but you can't make an SVG image into a Template object. But you can make a vector PDF version of the same image into a Template object - however, unlike the SVG file, you cannot change individual colours of a PDF image.

Is there an alternative way of achieving my requirements to limit customisation of colours of without having to go into the designer or require me to make 100s of products with different colour variants?

On your first shirt, I entered the design tool and tried changing the colors of the 4 SVGs that were unlocked. Got the error message on all of them.

On your second test shirt, I entered the design tool and was able to change both colors of both SVGs with no issue.

If you want an element that you and/or the customer can change the colors of from within the design tool, you need to use an SVG file or one of the basic shapes Z provides in the tool. If you want an element that the customer can replace with their own from the product page (a template) you need to use a non-SVG file. There's no way I am aware of to achieve both functions with the same element and I don't understand why that would be necessary. The purpose of a template image is so the customer can easily replace it with their own. If they're replacing it then there's no need to edit the colors of the place-holder.

Hello Im making some business cards with social media icons, it would be very usefull indeed if the svg files could function as template objects. I`m finding myself having to save the icons in different colors to suit the different backgrounds and style of cards.

So I have created a customisable version of the design here

A few issues -
1. Only text objects can be a template object

2. I cannot change the colour of editable items (such as the orange sail) - I just get an error message

I get the same error. Tried some of my own products with SVGs and there is no issue with changing the colors so this points to your SVG file being corrupt rather than it being a Z issue.

It's a nice design though. If you make the boat name & sail number template text and use a proper SVG for the sail colors, that should really appeal to customers. 🙂  You shuld probably not use Weta on there though as it's a brand name.

That's strange because it also works for me in the designer but not when I post the product for sale - did you try actually using it on a live product?

I also created a new SVG file for each customisable object, copy and pasting from the original file and some (like the floats) are very simple shapes. I could understand if it was having issues with the original file with the static objects (like the grey sails and mast), since that has multiple layers with each object in a layer, but I uploaded that as a PDF because it keeps the clipping of the window in the sail, whereas imported SVGs don't seem to respect clipping in the designer.

I created another test shirt here with two simple circle SVG objects which changed colour without error. Then tried adding the same design objects from the boat - which also worked correctly.

Hmm - may be it got corrupted in the designer - I'll try again with a new shirt.

Oh, I just noticed the back of your shirt. Yeah, you can't use that unless you are an authorized representative of Weta with permission to be making/selling products with their name & slogan on them.

I'm an authorised Weta representative and all graphics and slogans are my own apart from the "Weta, Fun, Fast, Easy" logo.
