I'm having problems with the previews when the foil color is set to silver on a dark background. The preview for this design looks fine with gold foil but not with silver - any advice on how we should handle this? I'm assuming that the silver is rendered this way so it will show up on a white background - wondering if we could maybe get an option in the preview pane for one that's rendered for a dark background?

Please disregard! I told you it was stupid - lol. I see the foil layer now.

I know I'm really being stupid here but how do you pick what you want to be in foil? Is everything you add automatically foil? Any help anyone can provide is greatly appreciated. And thank you in advance.

Not stupid. 😊 I need to go in and try again because I too couldn't figure out what became foil and what didn't.

And... could the "About this Product" section include some information about the weight/thickness of the paper? That's one of the most common questions I receive.

Minimum order of 10 doesn't make this good for Valentine's day or any personalized cards. As an experiment I tried  Valentine's Day card, but I will delete it after I saw there is a minimum order of ten. Also when I try to add a no-foil image on the front, it is distorted. It is stretched horizontally and looks awful. Think I will pass on making these.

I tried a Mother's Day card, but how many mothers can a person have? 😀
The stretching happened to me, too. I'm not sure about the reason, but I noticed that grouping objects is not a good idea, it seems to create white spaces that really shouldn't be there.

Would you like to swap links?

Love the new foil cards! The preview with the silver foil looks off on my designs too @Cat 😞 hope they can fix that...

Most of my designs don't make good foil cards anyway. They seem to work best with simple line drawings. What I do have that would work are not good for invitations or holidays. The new cards don't seem to be showing up when I search for a blank product either. In fact, I have not been able to find just a 5 by 7 greeting card that way either.

I love these new cards, and I am enjoying designing for them! I especially like having the gold with a regular color printed background.

I agree with the comments above however, the previews for silver and rosegold not so good, hence I am avoiding those options for now.

Also the previews for gold on white do not look so good.

The gold on black is very effective.

I finally got one made that I kind of like. I don't think they will ever be one of my favorite cards to make.

You did a very good job, I like the way the flowers sit above the gold foil.

That was completely by accident. The heart and flowers are originally a dusty rose. When I tried to foil it, the flowers came through as almost transparent. So I tried putting the original colored image behind the foil image. The color of the flowers showed through and the heart came out foiled. Just a happy little accident that worked.

TRY IT WITH A DARKER BACKGROUND.

I really don't care for dark backgrounds. I tried a dark background on a different foil card and it seemed like the only thing that really worked was navy blue, black or red. I know a customer might like it that way, but I don't like putting a design that I don't like.

It looks absolutely lovely but I'm missing the "how to make it happen".  It obviously has to be the special card and it needs to be an svg file -- but how do you marry those two facts to come out with changing it into the foil?

I figured it out . . . more or less.  Very interesting effects!!

Look at my reply to Creativedesigns. The effect was completely unplanned. It was not an svg file, it was a png file.

I would like for someone to tell me how this happens as well.

Just realized this - On the foil layer, if you choose the color as black, it will print as foil. If you choose the color as white, it reverses it. As in that bit will NOT print foil, so the underlying background color will show through.
Epiphany! 😅

I've been waiting FOREVER for this! I have one request, please. Would it be possible to allow us as CREATORS to order 1 single sample card? I have a design that I wanted to post that looks fine on screen, but I'm worried that the rose gold foil text won't show up well against the background in real life.

Good idea! I also would love to order samples of my designs for marketing purposes.

Hi James, I'm really learning how to do this -- question though -- are you aware that the standard message comes up when the gold foil card is viewed saying that the glitter isn't real, etc etc. which it normally isn't  . .  here is a link to show you:  https://www.zazzle.com/fifty_fabulous_birthday_black_real_gold_foil_invitation-256165640288653384

I retract -- it is only coming up on products where I do have additional items that are glitter that will not print . .. learning is sooooooooo hard . . .

you have 'glitter' in the tags, this is why

Success at last -- two versions -- one very simple -- but the foil really makes it stand out and the 2nd quite "busy" and the foil still really makes a difference.

Thank you -- it is really a great tool.

I've mentioned this on another thread, but since this is the official one, I'm mentioning it here too.

If you leave the preview set to the movie (the default) you get a really weird thumbnail image. This is what it looks like in the collection when not signed in (so this is a public view not a back-end view.) I'm not sure what it looks like in the general marketplace, but I assume it's the same.

So THAT'S how that happens! I saw a couple listings like that, and thought it was a designer uploaded image or something.😀

Cat

@Connie It totally threw me at first too! My guess is that it's showing the individual frames of the movie instead of integrating them into an animation.

This is one of my favs so far, I am really enjoying trying to work out how to get the best out of this foil effect. Works beautifully as an accent, or with large text. It would be lovely as others have said to be able to order single samples at a discounted price to creators.

I didn't see this thread so I just posted some feedback in the the 'Feedback and Suggestions' category. In my confusion I hastily assumed that's where a feedback thread would be (scratching head).

I posted some examples of 'in situ' images showing the look of gold foil on both the invite and the folded greeting cards with different background color. I should maybe have shown the silver too....I didn't notice how off they look too.

The foil layer gives 2 text options, back and white: however if you select white the text disappears and does not show up. What is the purpose of the white text option?

The black text option seems to leave a black border around the text at close range

Also i second the above poster who noted that gold often shows up fine but silver and rose gold does not.

There is no way to partially layer a print image over the foil

White acts as a "mask," so you can actually have foil elements intertwined above and below the text and/ or images.

Question for Zazzle: will the new flat foil cards be divided into invitations (already exist), save the dates, thank you cards and other paper products as it was done to traditional cards? If yes, when? If no, what is your recommendation as to how create matching Save the Dates using flat foil cards? choose Foil Invitation - post for sale as Save the Date indicating that in the title and tags? Also, is there any chance those would be available in 3.5x5? Thank you.

Another question: would it be possible to add another design area in addition to the existing ones (as in Front, Front Foil, and Back). I am talking about the possibility of an image (a png) partly covering Front Foil area which allows for more interesting designs but requires another design area above Front Foil area. Like Front 2 🙂 Is this possible?

Cat
Honored Contributor III

@WittyBetty  and @Harmony  That's what the white in the foil layer is for. Check out this card. The holly leaves and pinecone sit on top of the gold foil frame. To achieve that, I copied those elements into the foil layer and made them completely white using the image filter. On the physical card the printing isn't actually done over the foil (I don't think that's possible,) but it tells the system not to print foil in that area so that the image on the front layer shows through and it gives the appearance that it's sitting on top of the foil. Hope that makes sense.

@Cat THANK YOU SO MUCH! I was hoping I'd be able to do something like this but had no idea the white layer could be used as a mask!

I'm very excited about this new feature. Is there a way to add the foil option to an existing design? For example, could I edit an existing design to include the foil feature as well as the others, and group them?
